The basics

As one of the most popular attractions in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina, Blagaj Monastery is a regular stop for day trips from Mostar and Sarajevo. These tours typically combine it with other popular attractions such as Kravice Waterfall (Vodopad Kravice) and the 15th-century citadel of Počitelj. After touring the monastery, you can take a boat ride into Buna Cave at the foot of the cliff or relax at one of the riverfront restaurants that overlook the turquoise Buna river.

A great day out and insight to the Mostar region
The whole day was excellent - our guide was welcoming and very knowledgeable and we felt we got insight into the history of the region and into current life there. The final stop - at Kravice waterfalls was probably the highlight. It was beautiful and a lovely place for a late lunch.

  • Stairs connect the monastery’s four stories, meaning the building is not wheelchair accessible.
  • Dress respectfully, as this is a Muslim place of worship. Cover your shoulders and legs, and women are expected to cover their hair with a provided scarf.
  • Tours from Mostar that include stops at Blagaj generally last at least eight hours.

How to get there

A guided tour is the easiest way to visit the Blagaj Monastery and other attractions in this part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, it is possible to travel there independently in roughly 30 minutes by taking the 10 or 11 bus that regularly goes from Mostar’s Spanish Square bus stop to the village of Blagaj.

When to get there

The Blagaj Monastery is open daily, but might close temporarily on occasion for prayers. Summer is the most popular time in Bosnia and Herzegovina and by extension Blagaj, so come early before the tour groups arrive. Other seasons are sure to be less busy, but surrounding facilities such as restaurants and the cave boats may not operate in low season.

Other activities around Blagaj

Visiting Blagaj Monastery may be the main reason you come to this small Bosnian village, but there’s plenty more to do. On one of the hilltops right above the monastery, you can explore the 14th-century remains of Blagaj Fortress, and admire its views of the region. The hills of Blagaj are also a prime destination for hiking and rock climbing, if you’re after something more active.
