The Basics

Almost all Munich city tours visit Odeonsplatz—hop-on hop-off bus tours stop right on the square, while walking and biking tours pass through on route to the English Garden. Admire the 17th-century Theatinerkirche church; see the old Odeon theater, after which the square was named; and visit the Feldherrnhalle monument, the site of Hitler's 1923 Beer Hall Putsch. At the north end of the square, the Ludwigstrasse, a grand boulevard lined with monumental buildings, stretches north all the way to the Victory Gate (Siegestor). To the east, the Italian Renaissance-style gardens of the Hofgarten lead to the Residenz royal palace.
