The basics

Ponta Negra is widely considered the best stretch of sand in Natal and one of the best urban beaches in Northeastern Brazil. Most city sightseeing tours of Natal will include a stop at the beach, as well as other points of interest, like Forte dos Reis Magos and the historic city center. For a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the beach and surrounding sand dunes, opt for a parasailing flight; sea turtle and dolphin sightings are not uncommon. The small, consistent waves here are also excellent for beginner surfers.

Morro do Careca

Stroll to the south end of Ponta Negra and you’ll see the imposing Morro do Careca (Bald Hill), a towering sand dune with a steep face plummeting into the sea. These days, its sandy slopes can only be appreciated from the beach, to protect the dune from erosion and potential damage to the surrounding rain forest.
