Far more than a performance center, House of the Three Worlds was co-founded by Nicaraguan poet Ernesto Cardenal as a community center specializing in theater, fine arts, and music. It's got an all-ages graphics studio, music and art programs for kids, and opportunities for locals to create workshops, apply for residencies, and display artwork. The performance schedule varies.
It's convenient to visit the center while strolling through the city, although some visitors come as part of a tour. Group and private tours launching from Granada, Managua, and Masaya often stop in the city and nearby attractions like Masaya Volcano. Some cruise ship expeditions from San Juan Del Sur also visit Granada.
The “Three Worlds” in its name refers to the Indigenous, European, and African cultures found in Nicaragua.
The center has its own radio station, Volcano Radio that runs throughout the day.
Even if the venue is closed, it’s worth a stop to photograph the building's colonial architecture.
Not all shows require paid admission, but any fees directly fund the center.
House of the Three Worlds is located in the historic center of Granada, across the street from the Parque Central de Granada, so you'll have no trouble reaching the venue from other parts of the city. If you’re not visiting Granada on an organized tour, you can access the city by bus or car from Masaya and Managua via Highway 4 in about an hour.
This site is a community center so it’s best to check its hours of operation before visiting. On some days, such as national holidays, it may be closed, while other days may have extended hours due to scheduled performances. To tour the facility, try dropping by in the afternoon on a weekday.
Granada celebrates local art beyond the House of the Three Worlds. Head to the main mercado to shop for local art. You can also visit galleries such as the Calzada Art Center for more formal displays. If you’ve got the time, consider a day trip to the handicraft markets in nearby Masaya to pick up souvenirs.
