Papeete trip ideas
French Polynesia’s tiny capital, Papeete, is a transit point for many travelers flying or catching a ferry to more idyllic parts of the South Pacific island nation. But it’s worth hanging around for a while and getting to know the local Tahitian culture in Papeete. There are plenty of things to do in Papeete and around to fill a day, including visiting the bustling indoor market for local food, shopping for French Polynesian black pearls, checking out the French colonial-era architecture, and more.
The best time to visit Papeete is in the dry season, from May through October. The weather this time of year is pleasant, and the chance of rain is low. If you’d like to learn more about local culture, or just want to see a variety of song and dance performances, visit in the first half of July, when the annual Heiva i Tahiti festival takes place.
Papeete is easy to navigate on foot, and there are few reasons for visitors to use public transit within the city, though taxis are widely available if needed. If you need to get to the airport from your hotel or the cruise port, you can either catch a taxi or prebook a private or shared transfer service.
If you want to try local fare on a budget, head down to Papeete’s waterfront. Every evening, you’ll find a line of food trucks, called roulottes, serving up fresh seafood, noodles, crepes, fries, and drinks. You can get your meal to go or sit down at one of the many tables and do some people-watching as you eat.

...MoreNo, Tahiti and Papeete are not the same, although they overlap. Tahiti is the name of an island in the country of French Polynesia, and Papeete is a city on that island. Papeete is the capital of French Polynesia and its largest town.
...MoreYes, Tahiti is generally cheaper than Bora Bora. That’s because Bora Bora is known for its high-end resorts, while Tahiti offers a wider range.
