A Long But Fulfilling Day In Puebla
The hotel pick up worked perfectly with both driver and guide eager to answer questions about things we saw along the way to the assembly point. The drive to Puebla was about 2+ hours each way and took us through a part of Mexico City we won't rush to but accentuated the sheer size and scope of one of the largest cities in the world. Once we left the valley, we drove on a highway that took us through pine forests and evidence of multiple wildland fires before dropping down into the Puebla area. The tour planned a rest break in both directions at the 80-90 minute mark - essential for older travelers like us. Stops included a unique church, and the Aztec historical site before heading to a late lunch at the Hotel Colonial which was a historical landmark. The lunch was average but we got very attentive service. We then took a walking tour of downtown Puebla and walked through their version of Barcelona's La Rambla including a stop at a world famous ceramics factory. Gaby, our guide, was a wealth of information throughout the day and helped us find our way back to our hotel because the Historic Quarter streets were block due to a free concert in Zocalo, very close to our Hampton Inns hotel. The tour includes more walking than you might expect (3+ miles). Gaby was one of the best and most attentive guides we have had when visiting 40+ countries. Ask for her when you can. While the day was long, we felt it was a highlight of our 10 days in Mexico City.
