Located just southwest of the Colonial Zone, the Gazcue neighborhood is one of the oldest in Santo Domingo. The residential area is home to fine examples of Spanish colonial architecture, plus the National Palace, the Plaza de la Cultura, the Palace of Fine Arts, and a stretch of the waterfront Malecon.
Stroll around the scenic neighborhood to admire its many beautiful colonial buildings. The National Palace, though not usually open to the public, is worth a stop to take in its exterior. The Plaza de la Cultura and Palace of Fine Arts offer many options for arts and culture, including several outstanding museums and theaters, and live performances. At the southern end of Gazcue, the Malecon offers waterfront views and is home to many restaurants and nightclubs.
The neighborhood is ideal for architecture fans, history buffs, and art and culture lovers.

There are plenty of dining, shopping, and nightlife options in Gazcue, especially along the Malecon waterfront promenade.
Gazcue is adjacent to the Zona Colonial. Avenida 30 de Marzo is to the east, Avenida Maximo Gomez is to the west, and Avenida Francia is to the north. It’s within walking distance of the Zona Colonial and an easy taxi ride. The metro and bus both have stops in and near the neighborhood. Many sightseeing tours also include a stop at the National Palace.
The best time to visit Santo Domingo and Gazcue is between December and April when the weather is warm and dry. During the day, stroll along the streets to admire the colonial architecture and explore its museums and cultural institutions. At night, many bars and nightclubs are open at the southern end, along the Malecon. Most museums are closed on Mondays.
Located at the western end of Gazcue, the Plaza de la Cultura is home to the National Theater, National Library, and four museums. You can admire works from local artists at the Museum of Modern Art; see fossils and skeletons at the National Museum of Natural History; learn about the Trujillo years in the Museum of History and Geography; and explore ancient Taino artifacts at the Museum of the Dominican Man.
