Measuring just 6 miles (10 kilometers) across, the hourglass-shaped island is both a rugged destination for nature lovers and a popular weekend getaway for residents of nearby cities like Curitiba and Paranaguá.

How to get there

Ilha do Mel is located in the Bay of Paranaguá, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) offshore from Paranaguá. The only way to reach the island is by boat: Vessels depart from Paranaguá and the smaller settlement of Pontal do Sul. Note that there are no vehicles or roads on the island; instead, it is crisscrossed by a network of hiking and walking trails.

When to get there

Ilha do Mel (Honey Island) is a popular destination throughout the year. Though the high season is during Brazil’s summer (December through March), that time of year also brings lots of rain; visit from March through June for a drier experience. Alternatively, time your trip for August, when the island hosts a jazz festival.
