Mt. Liamuiga

St. Kitts

The Basics

Nearly half-way up the mountain, the land becomes a patchwork of farmland and small villages, opening to tropical rainforest before giving way to cloud forest. There are many half-day or full-day tours offering different ways to the mountain. Take a luxurious rail car that meanders 30 miles (48 kilometers) through the island, a guided hike to the summit, or an open-top safari truck through tropical forests, St. Pauls village, and the mountain’s tallest peaks for spectacular views of surrounding islands.

Beautiful rain forest HIKE (not walk!)! Great guide and experience all around.
Our guide, Adrian, was fantastic. He shared with us the history of St. Kitts as well as other Caribbean islands. His knowledge of plants/medicinal qualities was impressive and we learned about healing teas and edible parts of plants (we tasted a "fiddle head"!). Most importantly, Adrian was flexible with our trip and was a fantastic guide and support! Oh, and we got to see a green monkey in the tree canopy!

Brimstone Hill Fortress

On a hill overlooking the northwest coast of the island, Brimstone Hill Fortress is a well-preserved historic fortification. The structure was designed by the British and built by African slaves in the 17th century and used interchangeably by the British and French forces that captured the island. Dubbed "The Gibraltar of the Caribbean," the fortress was in full use until its abandonment in the 1850s, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
