Just a short stroll from the beaches of Mar del Plata, the Mar del Plata Aquarium is a large, important sea life center in Argentina that's part rehabilitation center and part aquarium. Visit to see a variety of marine creatures, including dolphins, penguins, sea lions, and a variety of seabirds.
You have your pick of attractions, animal shows, and demonstrations at Aquarium Mar del Plata. Watch the dolphins, sea lions, and penguins with their trainers; learn more about small sea creatures at the touch pools; and spot exotic fish and rays at the aquarium exhibitions. Interactive animal experiences, supervised by the aquarium staff, are available with an upgraded ticket.
The majority of exhibitions are outdoors, so dress accordingly and bring sunscreen and a hat in summer.
Most of the shows are in Spanish, but staff members speak English.
Visitor facilities include free parking, a gift shop, and a number of cafes and food kiosks.
The aquarium is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers.
The aquarium is located next to the Punta Mogotes Lighthouse along the seafront Avenida de los Trabajadores, on the south coast of Mar del Plata. Buses (colectivos) run from downtown Mar del Plata to the aquarium, stopping nearby; or else, it’s a short drive or taxi ride from downtown.
The Mar del Plata Aquarium is open daily in summer (December to March) and only on Friday and Sunday the rest of the year. It’s worth checking the daily schedule to avoid missing the show or demonstration that interests you. Weekends and holidays are the busiest times; visit outside of these periods to avoid crowds.
As one of Argentina’s most popular beach resorts, Mar del Plata is known for its miles of sandy beaches and for being a great destination for families. Along with the aquarium, other fun spots for families include the neighboring Punta Mogotes beachfront, which has coastal walks, dunes, and a historic lighthouse; the nearby Aquasol water park; the MAR Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, which offers free entrance; and Termas Marinas Thermal Water Park.
