The basics

Designed by architect John W. Harkness in the Gothic Revival style, the Church of the Epiphany is distinct for its snow-white exterior and soaring tower. A historical highlight in downtown DC, the religious landmark is especially known for its Civil War–era history—its congregation had included members such as Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln, and was split by the conflict; the building was also later used as a wartime hospital. The church is now a popular destination for history enthusiasts and sightseers, as well as local worshipers.

The Church of the Epiphany is three blocks from the White House, and is also a quick commute from the National Mall and other DC highlights. As such, it’s easy to plan an independent visit as part of a sightseeing day out.
