3 Days on the Amalfi Coast for Foodies

Curated by Rebecca WinkeItalophile and travel enthusiast who’s written about Italy for more than two decades.

Widely celebrated for its spectacular scenery and VIP vibe, the Amalfi Coast also is home to one of Italy's top culinary scenes. From casual pizzerias to award-winning fine dining, there’s something for every discerning palate along the coastline.

The area features a variety of local specialties—think artisan mozzarella, heirloom lemons, extra-virgin olive oil, red and white wines, and an endless array of fresh fish and seafood. All make for memorable meals at waterfront eateries, hillside farms, and clifftop wineries. Between basking on the beach and cruising along the coast, here’s how you can mangiare bene (eat well) on the Amalfi Coast.

The scorching summer temperatures mellow after sunset, so most restaurants offer outdoor dining at both lunch and dinner.

If you only have time for one thing, make it an authentic Neapolitan pizza.

Day 1

Begin by exploring iconic waterfront towns and little-known hilltop wine country by car (or with a driving tour). Scenic route 163 snakes along the coastline, passing Positano and Amalfi where you can sample classic coastal cuisine at one of the many landmark trattorias. Then, head into the hills to Tramonti, where terraced vineyards cover the steep slopes. Stop at a boutique cellar to taste local red and white wines.

On the drive back, pause for an aperitivo (aperitif) in Praiano. The local wine bar in this tiny fishing hamlet boasts a panoramic terrace for a front-row view of the sunset.

Day 2

This morning, connect with a home cook to browse the stalls of a local market for seasonal ingredients. Then, watch as your host cooks up beloved traditional recipes for lunch. Or, join in the preparation yourself with a hands-on cooking class and learn how to create specialties like gnocchi and mozzarella from scratch.

This afternoon, visit a family-run olive farm and mill, sampling a variety of oils with a guided tasting to help you discern the subtle differences. For dinner head to the courtyard at the Donna Stella Pizzeria in the heart of Amalfi’s old town for a classic Margherita.

Day 3

Go to Sorrento, the historic resort town that is considered a gateway to the Amalfi Coast and a culinary destination in its own right. Join a food tour to sample local specialties like artisan provolone, salami, limoncello, and more at local farms and producers.

From Sorrento, it’s a scenic 20-minute ferry ride to Capri, the island some call the most beautiful in the Bay of Naples. Stroll through the charming boutique-lined lanes of Capri town and stop for a Spritz in the buzzy Piazzetta square before meeting up with a local host for a cooking demonstration and home dinner.
