3 Days in Brooklyn for Foodies

Curated by Claire Bullena food enthusiast with a soft spot for Brooklyn's beer scene.

After graduating from college, I spent several years living in Brooklyn. Back then, I was a burgeoning home cook and food lover, and the borough was my culinary oyster, full of delicious discoveries. I also dove into its craft beer scene—so much so that I led beer-themed walking tours around Brooklyn.

Though I’ve since relocated to London, Brooklyn’s reputation as a white-hot dining destination has only gotten stronger. From classic pizza joints to the hippest small-plates restaurants, there’s so much to see and do (and bite and chew) on a 3-day Brooklyn trip.

Dress for the seasons, especially if you’re on a walking tour—weather hits the extremes.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a tour of Brooklyn’s classic pizza spots.

Day 1

The best introduction to Brooklyn’s food scene? Start with an overview of some of its most delicious neighborhoods on a walking tour in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge where you'll discover the culinary highlights of DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. Or, soak up the local feel when you drop by mom-and-pop food businesses in Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens.

Leave room for dessert. Head north to Williamsburg—a 20-minute taxi ride away—and munch on the borough’s sweetest treats on a donut-themed excursion. From modern stalwarts like Doughnut Plant to the old-school Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop, you have lots to try.

Day 2

You can’t come to Brooklyn and not eat pizza. Some of New York’s first pizzerias opened in the borough more than 100 years ago, and today it's home to both traditional coal-fired pizza restaurants and new-school slice shops. Discover several of Brooklyn’s most beloved pizzerias on a pizza walking tour.

Your pizza experience isn’t complete without a beer to go alongside. Brooklyn’s sudsy stops include everything from top-rated craft breweries and hip beer bars to old-school dives. In the evening, make your way to Gowanus and embark on a beery Brooklyn tour.

Day 3

One of Brooklyn’s most in-demand neighborhoods, the ever-hip Williamsburg, is also a mecca for food lovers. Discover its gourmet treats—from bagels and dumplings to biscuits and empanadas—all in one walking tour. Or, for a uniquely local cultural immersion, visit South Williamsburg’s longstanding Hasidic Jewish community and sample traditional kosher dishes while you’re there.

All that tasting and sampling deserves a nightcap. Stick to Williamsburg, which also boasts a dynamite nightlife scene, for an evening bar crawl to its cocktail lounges, neighborhood bars, and other must-sip spots.
