3 Days in Grand Turk for First Timers

Curated by Jen Penga Tahoe-based writer who loves traveling, food, and adventures.

With three days in Grand Turk, you have plenty of time to explore the cultural and historical attractions of the island, enjoy time on the beach and in the water, and go cruising to a nearby island. Here’s how to best enjoy three days in and around Grand Turk.

Day 1

Grand Turk is renowned for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear turquoise waters, and abundant life underwater. Spend your first morning exploring the pristine waters off the west coast, which offer a number of snorkeling and scuba diving sites. Alternatively, head to the east side of the island, and go swimming and snorkeling with stingrays.

In the afternoon, beach-hop to another white sand beach. There are multiple to choose from on the west coast of the island, including Pillory Beach, Governor’s Beach, and Cruise Center (SunRay) Beach, which is busy when there's a cruise ship in town. For more than just sunbathing, try surfing or bodyboarding the artificial waves at FlowRider at the Cruise Center, or enjoy drinks at the swim-up bar at the largest Margaritaville in the Caribbean.

Spend your second day exploring the British Bermudian colonial heritage of Grand Turk, visible in the colorful architecture in Cockburn Town, the capital of Turks and Caicos. A number of guided tours make exploring the island easy and typically stop at top attractions such as the Grand Turk Lighthouse, Her Majesty’s Prison, and the Turks and Caicos National Museum. You can also rent a car, golf cart, or bicycle, and explore on your own.

Spend the afternoon enjoying land-based outdoor activities, such as horseback riding, exploring on ATVs or dune buggies, and kayaking. Alternatively, learn about the island’s connection to the salt industry at the Salt House, or about the part it played in the space race at the replica Friendship 7 module just outside the airport.

Day 3

Charter a boat or join an existing tour to cap off your final day. Half- and full-day charters are available to go deep sea fishing, whale watching (in season January to April), snorkeling and scuba diving, or just cruising around to the many small and deserted islands near Grand Turk, such as Long Cay, Round Cay, or Martin Alonzo Pinzon Cay.

Alternatively, enjoy a laid-back visit to tiny Salt Cay. Enjoy water sports, relaxing on the white-sand beaches, or exploring on foot, or by bike or golf cart. It’s also a great spot for whale watching in season. Stay for the sunset at South District Beach before heading back to Grand Turk. Wrap up your trip to the islands with some chill drinks to some live ripsaw, the national music of the Turks and Caicos.
