3 Days in Salzburg for Foodies

Curated by Margot Biggwho has eaten plenty of apple strudel and Sacher torte.

Salzburg has always had a special place in my heart. When she was a child, my mother lived in the city for a spell, and when I’d ask her to tell me bedtime stories about her girlhood, she’d regale me with tales of her childhood in Salzburg.

Later, I visited and discovered that Salzburg was, indeed, as enchanting as my youthful imagination had made it out to be. One thing I wasn’t prepared for was all the delicious food. But don’t take my word for it—discover Salzburg’s culinary delights for yourself with this food-themed itinerary.

Be prepared for cool weather throughout the year and snow in winter.

f you only have time for one thing, make it historic Old Town Salzburg.

Day 1

Spend your first day familiarizing yourself with Salzburg's culinary scene on a food-tasting tour, which will take you to local shops and markets to sample delights such as pumpkin seed sausages and sweets.

Then head to Old Town, known as Altstadt Salzburg, for a bit of shopping before setting off for an evening food and beer tasting in the Mönchsberg. You'll try all sorts of traditional dishes while a beer sommelier guides you through pairing.

Day 2

Spend your second day learning about the wine of Austria with a private pairing session, led by a local sommelier at the Miele Experience Centre, located in the Wals area, a short trolleybus ride from the heart of Salzburg. You'll learn about Austrian wine while sampling six wines, paired with local charcuterie.

Finish your first day with a Mozart concert held at Salzburg Fortress, followed by a romantic dinner in the fortresses' Panorama Restaurant. For added value, book a package that includes dinner and a concert.

Day 3

Spend your final day learning how to cook some of the delights you tried while in Salzburg. Start with a baking class, where you'll learn how to cook all sorts of local pastries. To continue learning, sign up for a second pastry-making class where you’ll learn how to make apple strudel and Salzburger nockerl, a soufflé—some classes include a free goulash lunch.
