Curated by Helen ShepherdSouth Londoner on the loose in Switzerland.

Desert meets sea in Swakopmund, a lively resort town that’s rich in history, culture, and nature. In 48 hours, it’s possible to gain an overview of the city, enjoy its coastal location, and take a day trip to discover Namibia’s nature. Here’s how.

Day 1: Morning

Kickstart your time in Swakopmund on a city tour; opt to travel by bike or bus for hassle-free transfers between attractions, and learn about the city’s colonial history and modern culture from a guide.

Day 1: Afternoon

Immerse yourself in the city’s cultural heritage during a visit to Swakopmund Museum, Kristall Galerie, or the National Aquarium. Or, embark on a food-focused tour for a taste of domestic cuisine; most tours include samples.

Day 1: Night

Absorb sunset views while dining on fresh seafood in one of Swakopmund’s beachside eateries, then unwind with a nightcap in one of the city center’s lively bars. Alternatively, head into the surrounding dunes on a night walk for a different perspective of the Namib’s flora and fauna.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon

Dedicate your second day to discovering wider Namibia’s natural highlights on of the many full- or half-day tours that depart from Swakopmund. Whether you want to fish on the Atlantic, cycle across the desert, see native wildlife up close, or explore sand dunes by quad bike, you have options. Out-of-town tours typically include pickup and drop-off, but not lunch, so it’s worth bringing some snacks with you. Alternatively, cooking classes are a great option for those who want to stay in the city; you’ll enjoy a hands-on experience with local produce, and gain insight into Namibian cooking traditions.

Day 2: Night

Many travelers head directly to Windhoek or Walvis Bay on their last night, for easy access to the international airports. Others prefer to stay in rural camps or guest houses outside the city, for an immersive natural experience combined with hotel-quality amenities.
