Swakopmund trip ideas
The township of Mondesa provides a glimpse into Namibia’s complex history. Located on the outskirts of Swakopmund, the settlement was initially used to segregate Black people when South African apartheid laws were extended to Namibia. Today, the settlement is home to a diverse community of residents from across Namibia.
Tours to Mondesa highlight the vibrancy of this community–local artwork and fresh fruit can be found at the open-air markets, and you can take a break with some tasty street food. Some tours also offer performances from local musicians or the chance to take a cooking class to learn about the region’s cuisine.
Opt for a tour to get the most out of your experience. Your guide will be able to share some of the community's hidden gems that you might not find by yourself.
Bring cash if you want souvenirs, as many small stores won’t accept cards.
Wear comfortable walking shoes so you can explore the area.
It’s a 10-minute drive from the center of Swakopmund, and taxis are easy to find–just make sure to agree on a price before getting in. Most tours offer transportation to the community before taking you on a walking tour, while some offer the option to explore via bicycle.
June to August is winter in Namibia, but the temperature remains mild, and the number of visitors is low. The best time to visit Mondesa is in the late morning when the temperature is comfortable, and the markets are still busy.
Rather than wearing yourself out on a walking tour, opt for a bike tour to see more of the settlement than you would on foot. With kids playing on the streets, vendors hawking street food, and the sounds of many different languages, you’ll be fully immersed in Mondesa’s unique environment.
