Bonito, situated in the Serra da Bodoquena, is dotted with hundreds of limestone caverns, grottoes, waters, and rivers, all with some of the clearest waters on the planet. Such excellent visibility makes for exceptional snorkeling, and these are some of the best places to try it.
It might seem unusual to snorkel in a river, but that’s one of the biggest draws of Bonito’s Rio da Prata. Thanks to the river’s excellent visibility, travelers from around the world come to explore it and observe its freshwater fish and aquatic plants. Most snorkeling tours include neoprene suits to protect you from the cold.
Bonito’s most celebrated attraction, this narrow abyss begins as a small crack in the earth and opens up into one of the largest underground caverns in Brazil. After repelling 236 feet (72 meters), you can snorkel in the seemingly bottomless lagoon where visibility is up to 98 feet (30 meters). The atmosphere is further enhanced by the arresting ensemble of stalactites and stalagmites.
In the Mysterious Lagoon, at the bottom of a 246-foot (75-meter) sinkhole, visitors can snorkel amid an aquatic scape of fish swimming around fallen tree trunks. From April to October, visibility can be as good as 164 feet (50 meters).
