The Basics

Main Beach is a quintessential Aussie beach, where you can while away the hours swimming and sunbathing, learn to surf, or join the locals for a beachside BBQ. Outdoor enthusiasts can also take part in water sports such as kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, go snorkeling and scuba diving around the Julian Rocks marine reserve, or swim out to explore the Tassie II shipwreck, which lies just off-shore. For the most impressive views, follow the coastal walk along the beachfront, all the way to the Byron Lighthouse.

How to Get There

Main Beach is located right in front of Byron Bay town, just a short stroll from the shops. Buses arriving from Sydney or the Gold Coast typically arrive at the Jonson Street Bus Terminal, from where it’s a less than 10-minute walk to the beach. For those arriving with their own transport, there is paid parking along the beachfront, but it can fill up quickly in summer.

When to Get There

Sunny year-round, Main Beach is liveliest in the summer months (December to February) and it can get crowded on weekends and holidays. Get up at dawn to watch the surfers and spot dolphins and whales (July to December only) along the coast, then stick around until the evening to watch the sunset and join the beachside parties, which often include live music and fire spinners.

Beaches of Byron Bay

Byron Bay is home to some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, so don’t spend all of your time on Main Beach. Just to the east, Clarkes Beach offers a more tranquil atmosphere and great snorkeling; while surfers will want to head to The Pass, legendary for its surf breaks. Alternatively, escape the crowds to swim, snorkel, and explore the rock pools at Wategos Beach; enjoy a beachside BBQ at Broken Head Beach; or take a hike along the wild coastline of Tallow Beach.
