Located 16.5 miles (26.5 kilometers) southeast of Launceston, Clarendon House is well worth a visit for travelers interested in architecture and Tasmanian history. With a self-guided tour of the estate, visitors can learn about the home’s first owner, merchant James Cox; see the interiors of the heritage buildings; and admire the house’s collection of 19th- and 20th-century costumes. Afterward, stroll around the walled garden before exploring the surrounding parkland, which features, among other attractions, a stone barn with restored coaches and carriages.
With the grounds of Clarendon House being so large, it’s advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes if you plan on properly exploring the gardens and park.
Owing to its historic nature, visitors may encounter barriers to accessibility inside Clarendon House and its additional buildings.
Be aware that Clarendon House can close to the public on unscheduled days due to major events.
The on-site café, when not closed for events, serves scones and tea, while the grounds have picnic tables should you wish to bring food with you.
Clarendon House is located off route C416, just south of Launceston Airport and the town of Evandale. Because of its rural setting, driving is really the only way to get there, with the drive from Launceston taking roughly 30 minutes. There are no nearby bridges over the South Esk River, so plan your route accordingly.
With Clarendon House closed during the winter months of July and August and summer being the high season for tourism in Tasmania, the optimal times to visit this rural estate are the shoulder seasons of spring (September–November) and fall (March–May). Not only will these months present the nicest weather and fewest visitors, but you may also get to see the gardens and park decked out in seasonal colors.

On the ghost tour, you’ll be joined by paranormal investigators as you explore the buildings and grounds of Clarendon House at night and learn about the strange presence that has been felt there.
