Bayeux Cathedral is a popular stop on area tours, often combined with nearby attractions, including the Tapestry Museum and Old Bayeux. The cathedral has colorful stained-glass windows, multiple chapels, a neoclassical high altar, and a vaulted, below-ground crypt with magnificent murals. Guided tours of the cathedral may also include the treasure room and chapter house, otherwise closed to the public.
The cathedral is free to enter.
Wheelchair access is via a side door on the south side of the nave, but the surrounding cobblestone streets may be difficult for some users.
Strollers are welcome inside the cathedral.
Bayeux Cathedral is on Rue du Bienvenu in Old Bayeux. It’s a short distance from several of the city’s key sites: the Tapestry Museum is 2 miles (3 kilometers) away, and the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy (Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie) is 6 miles (1 kilometer) away. Public parking is available 25 miles (4 kilometers) away at Parc Michel Ornano.
The cathedral is generally open daily, with longer evening hours in the busy summer months. Sunday morning mass is open to the public and features impressive pipe organ music, a French-language service, and, occasionally, a few baptisms. Free sound-and-light shows are sometimes held after dark outside the cathedral, with images projected on the facade and the adjacent Tree of Liberty.
Market days in Bayeux feature local products from around the region, from apple cider to cheese and handicrafts. Wednesday morning markets in Bayeux are held on the pedestrian street Rue Saint-Jean; the larger Saturday market is at Place Saint Patrice. On Thursday nights during the summer, you can sometimes find arts, crafts, and local food vendors near the Town Hall.
