Detta bergskedja är väl uppkallat efter den nordiska guden för styrka och stormar och finns ofta i listor över "mest fantastiska landskap på planeten". Det är därför inte en överraskning att Thor's Woods (Thórsmörk) är en av de bästa vandringsplatserna på Island, inbäddad mellan glaciärerna Mýrdalsjökull, Tindfjallajökull och Eyjafjallajökull. Thor's Woods är en vildmark som är kär i hjärtat av många islänningar, och ligger mellan tre glaciärer och innehåller raviner, fortfarande varma vulkankratrar, mäktiga vattenfall, mossade grottor och spektakulära dalar korsade av Krossáfloden. Denna glaciala dal är verkligen ett vandrarparadis!
Besökare som tänker besöka Thórsmörk bör förbereda sig därefter, för detta är en av Islands mest avlägsna platser, och bekvämligheterna är få och långt ifrån. Korrekt vandringskängor, varma kläder och en akut sunt förnuft krävs för att vandra denna extremt robusta region som kännetecknas av hårda förhållanden och oförutsägbart väder. Lyckligtvis finns det ett stort antal markerade spår som hjälper besökare att hålla sig på rätt spår.
With towering cliffs covered in emeraldine moss and glacial views for miles, Thorsmork very much looks like the perfect setting for a Norse legend. Visiting isn't easy, however, and requires both preparation and experience. You'll need to be ready for rugged and unpredictable terrain. In addition to hiking, travelers come here to camp and explore the region on horseback. Thorsmork’s harsh ruggedness keeps it virtually sealed off to most travelers outside of the summer months, though some tour operators with specially modified vehicles can bring visitors there during cooler months.
Regular compact cars are not allowed in Thorsmork.
Make sure to bring everything you’d need for a wilderness hike, including water, snacks, and warm, water-resistant clothing.
The trails here are well-marked; however, it’s wise to bring a map or a fully charged phone with downloaded maps.
By way of accommodation, you have a variety of options, including glamping, tent camping, and mountain huts.
Thorsmork is about a 2.5-hour drive from Reykjavik via Route 1, which connects to an F-road (unpaved 4-wheel drive track) that leads into the area. Regular bus service is available in the summer. If you decide to drive yourself, you’ll need a 4WD vehicle and the confidence to drive it on rough roads and through rivers. Even if you rent a 4WD, your car rental company may prohibit you from braving the terrain. Guided tours to the region are also an option if you want to explore the area without the headache of navigating unfamiliar terrain.
Thorsmork is a summer destination and is inaccessible most of the year, except between June and August. This time of year is also the warmest and driest for hiking, and the long days make it possible to tackle longer hikes. That said, it’s still wise to arrive early in the morning as this is not the type of place you’d want to be accidentally stranded overnight.
North of Thorsmork, Landmannalaugar is another popular hiking area, with excellent options for day visitors and overnight backpackers. One of Iceland’s most popular trails, Laugavegur, connects Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork, and there are mountain huts along the way where you can spend the night. The entire journey usually takes four days.
