St. George's Anglican Church

The focal point of Basseterre, St. George's Anglican Church is the island’s largest church and a symbol of the island’s turbulent history. The original structure, built by the French in 1670, was burned down by the invading British colonists in 1706 who designed the church to look like a fortress, with a battlement-shaped tower, heavy volcanic rock walls, and a dark slate roof. Since then it’s suffered hurricanes, earthquakes, and more fires.
