Basseterre is the capital of St. Kitts, and can be reached by various means of transport. You can reach the city by plane, or by ferry from neighboring Nevis Island. Large cruise ships stop at the Basseterre port. From there, walk or take a bus to the city center.
Basseterre has a consistent climate year-round, with pleasant temperatures and regular drizzles that keep vegetation lush and green. The focal point of Basseterre, St. George's Anglican Church is the island’s largest church and a symbol of the island’s turbulent history. The original structure, built by the French in 1670, was burned down by the invading British colonists in 1706 who designed the church to look like a fortress, with a battlement-shaped tower, heavy volcanic rock walls, and a dark slate roof. Since then it’s suffered hurricanes, earthquakes, and more fires.
