Excellent . To start with confirmation given by the travel agent, the guide samuel and the support staff and the cook. A tour worth , guide/ driver samuel was very patient and knowledgeable and was very clear and communicative on animals and birds. He had good knowledge of the topography and this made the trip a memorable one. The stay arrangements and food was very good all along the tour. Overall a pleasant, memorable experience and thanks to MERU Slopes, Arusha.

An unnecessarily difficult and unhealthy adventure
Donnette_C, Jul 2023
I recently returned from a 5-day/4-night safari, conducted by Meru Slopes Tours and Safaris, to Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti. The parks are absolutely spectacular—the vistas divine and the animals mesmerizing. Our guide was professional, knowledgeable, diligent in looking out for animals and generally catered to our interests. But what should have been the trip of a lifetime turned out to be an unnecessarily difficult and unhealthy adventure. The first night we stayed at a lodge because the campsite was not ready. The lodge was in total disrepair. It was just barely standing on the last legs of former glory. My room had peeling paint, a hole in the bathroom ceiling, mold, missing window panes, a clogged shower and mosquito netting held together by tape. It was totally unsuitable for habitation. Other rooms were in similar condition and one of my travel companions was evicted from her room by a swarm of bees. For the next 3 nights we stayed at campsites. Before committing to the camping option, we were advised that the tents would come with beds. Later the beds morphed into some kind of mattress and sleeping bags. Despite the best efforts of several members of my party, we were unable to see pictures of what exactly that entailed. In reality, my tent came with a very thin foam—not more than 1 inch thick—partially stuffed into a Massai blanket. The sleeping bag was thin and well-worn and the small pillow tough. None of the contents of the tent seemed particularly clean and fresh. The foam was so thin I suffered back and hip pains. Nevertheless, I managed to negotiate the first 2 nights despite the discomfort but the third night was brutal. The temperature was in the 40s and the threadbare sleeping bag and thin foam were woefully inadequate to provide protection against the cold and wind. Not even a tough pillow was provided that night. The bathrooms at the campsites were filthy. I never saw anyone cleaning and when I inquired no one was identified as being responsible. There was usually no toilet paper, equipment was broken and even when hot water was promised there was none. That is a recipe for spreading disease. A clean functional bathroom is a reasonable expectation that should have been met. The common dining rooms at the campsites consisted of random bits and pieces of furniture—some literally broken. While sitting at a table, I was stabbed by a piece of rusty mental. Fortunately, there were medical professionals traveling in our group who came to my aide, providing cleansers and antibiotic ointment. They monitored my condition for several days. I could have easily contracted tetanus. This was not an isolated incident. Another member of my travel party also sustained multiple injuries due to rusty nails in the bathroom. Maintenance of appropriate levels of heat and cold for our food was suspect. The food often traveled with us with no evidence of containers that could regulate and guarantee food safety. I, along with others in my group, experienced intestinal upset during the journey. Food was often served late in the evening, which limited our ability to get a good night’s rest. Wi-Fi was promised on our vehicles. For most of the time we had no service. Why make that promise if service was not possible or likely?! We could have made other arrangements had we known Wi-Fi could not be relied upon. Our vehicle, inexplicably, had wet seats for more than 2 days. We discovered the wet seats when we sat in them and got wet. Even though our resourceful guide was able to provide Massai blankets as a dry padding, the damage was already done. The beauty of this trip, which was rather expensive to access, was marred by decisions made by Meru Slopes (and possible others). It seems as if reasonable levels of profits are not being plowed back into the business to improve and maintain facilities, logistics and services. Meru Slopes should not be selling substandard travel packages. Securing basic health and safety for customers should be a business imperative. There should be transparency regarding the quality of services in advance so that customers can make informed decisions. It would appear that Meru Slopes is relying on the grandeur of the parks to bridge the company’s inadequacies. Use this service at your risk!

Nightmare on the Serengeti

The most memorable part of the trip was our guide, Johnson. He was the consummate professional and we were able to see so many animals. He never got tired of our requests and made sure that we enjoyed the experience. The camp sites were terrible. The restrooms were dilapidated and not fit for human use. Two of my fellow travelers got cut by rusty nails in the aging showers and thankfully, they had their tetanus shots. To put it frankly, the bathrooms were filthy and did not appear to have any assigned person or persons to clean them on a regular basis. The dining rooms or places we were supposed to eat had old rusty tables and chairs, when there were chairs, because there were many different groups sharing the facilities. A mattress pad is not a mattress. The supplies were bare bones. The tents were much too thin for the wintery temperatures. There were no blankets supplied. Nothing to keep us warm. Two of my fellow travelers caught horrible colds and are just now getting over them after returning to the states when they were prescribed with antibiotics. We were ill-prepared for these brutal conditions during winter months. Temperatures dropped to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and even with five layers of clothes, I could not get warm. Prior to going on the trip, we repeatedly asked for a picture of the tent and its contents, but to no avail. I now know why it was kept from us, because we would have canceled had we been aware of the disgusting conditions or at the very least, upgraded our accommodations. Shame on you for putting your guests through these despicable conditions and calling it a vacation. American prisoners have better accommodations. Has your company checked on the conditions of the campsites? Bathrooms? There have to be some minimum standards set for your clients. I have used your products before all over Europe and Asia, but this was a downright disappointment and was patently unsafe. This product needs to be recalibrated before selling any additional packages. I thoroughly enjoyed the animals, but the living conditions were beyond the pale.
Best experience

We had the best safaritrip - more than we could ever dream of! Thanks to the best guide ever, Douglas, we experienced so many fantastic things. He knew the parks very well and knew just where to spot all the animals. He even managed to go so close to three cheetahs without scaring them that one of them jumped on top of the car and looked through the open roof for several minutes. He kept us calm through it all and we had a true once in a lifetime experience. And we even got to see all of the big five and so much more. We were also blessed with the best cook, Johanna, that made delicious meals for us three times a day. Even our picky daughter (12 years old) loved everything and our always-starving-son (14 year old and growing a lot) was full all day. Huge applause to Johanna. Will recommend the agency to everybody, and keep your fingers crossed that you get Douglas and Johanna! Good advices: Remember good binoculars and a camera with good zoom
Great 👍👏

Nature provided!

Wow, above and beyond! We were with driver Douglas and Cook Johanna, and the whole trip was perfection! Douglas was very knowledgeable about everything, told us very interesting facts about the animals we were observing, and knew where to find the most interesting spots. At one point we were racing through the szerengeti so we can spot 2 cheetahs! Also they were very flexible: we booked the trip with public campsite in tents, but after getting a bit sick on the first day, and so sleeping in a tent in the wild was not too practical when the toilet is potentially between you and wild animals, they were able to rebook our accomodation to a tented lodge. Also the food by Johanna was amazing: during our stay at the tented lodge we ate the 'premium' food from the lodge for dinner, but me and my fiancé both agreed that Johannas food was much better ^^

In English: We thank you for the feedback! We're glad you had a great experience with us. We understand camping safaris aren't for everyone, but we appreciate your recommendation. Samwel and Yohane are always here to assist you. Your satisfaction means a lot!
