The Piraeus Culinary Walk: Secret Food Delights of the Port of Athens (402076P2) tour exceeded all our expectations! My husband and I chose this tour for our pre-cruise day in Piraeus, after I scoured the internet for options that would allow us to experience various areas of Piraeus, learn about the city and culture, and sample the local Greek foods and alcoholic drinks in multiple venues. After reading the detailed description, we knew this tour provided it all—and it did! Athan, the guide and owner of Alpha Theta Single Member Private Company was outstanding from the time we booked the tour. His communication was excellent. We exchanged several emails through Viator, as he sought in advance to personalize the tour and answer any questions. This is a small tour without the pricing and obligation to be booked as a “private tour.” We were thrilled and impressed that Athan operated the tour for only two of us, although he can take as many as eight.
The tour offers pickup, but we chose to meet at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus where the tour begins. Athan found us easily since after exchanging pictures. Our first stop was at a nearby bakery, where we sampled coffee or drinks with generous sesame breadsticks (Kristinia?) while Athan reconfirmed our tastes and preferences in tailoring the itinerary to us. Although we assumed this was just a walking tour, Athan mentioned that he would drive us through the rest of the itinerary at any point we got tired, and that there were some distant areas and venues included that were too far away. We loved walking through the center of the city and to the port, stopping at another bakery for wonderful savory spinach and cheese pies (Spanakopita). We carried away the leftovers which were still delicious the next morning. There was so much to eat, and we were just beginning. Each stop had a purpose and provided new taste experience. At an old café in a lively square, we could sample Greek yogurt, pudding/custard and delicious, sweet pastries. We moved on to the Port where Athan was kind enough to stop at a store selling English language novels, since we had finished ours too quickly on the long flight over. After walking along the promenade and part of the port area, we were ready to ride!
Athan drove us through other port areas and several neighborhoods, as he described the history of the city and what was around. After a scenic view stop, we rode to a beautiful yacht harbor with a fantastic seaside restaurant. We sat out on the pier at a lovely, covered table watching the boats go by, as we sipped wine and enjoyed the most delicious seafood platter of calamari, shrimp, sea bass, and mussels! Sadly, I didn’t think about taking a picture, until the platter was half eaten. There were leftovers at each stop, which Athan wanted us to take with us—but there was only so much we could eat before our cruise the next day. We were sorry our adult kids or another couple weren’t there to share all this amazing food and experience. After driving by a section of the old wall, we came to the last stop—a hidden gem of a restaurant! The platters of bread, meat dishes, cheeses and multiple spreads provided a feast in itself—made exponentially better by the wine, beer, and ouzo! We had a chance to meet the chef and the owner who were both so welcoming, and even offered us a dessert to finish it all …with another round of ouzo (this time with honey). It was a fantastic way to end the day—and SO MUCH FUN!
We were so fortunate to have found and selected this tour. Athan is the BEST guide and individual you could meet. His family has a long history and love of Piraeus, and he cares deeply about making sure his guests have the best personalized experience. We were surprised and touched by the souvenir he gave us. This tour will remain one of our favorites in our extensive travels. Athan made our pre-cruise day in Piraeus a wonderful, memorable experience, and we would give this tour EXTRA stars if we could!
