What To Expect

Depart from a central Bruges location in a comfortable, air-conditioned minivan and travel towards the traditional town of Vladslo to visit the Germany Military Cemetery, a significant burial site of thousands of soldiers. Admire the poignant sculpture of Grieving Parents, by Käthe Kollwitz, then re-board your coach to venture to the small city of Diksmuide.

Disembark at the foreboding Trench of Death, a stretch of the Western Front upon which many soldiers met their end. Admire the statue of the 'Brooding Soldier' which commemorates the sacrifice of 2,000 Canadian soldiers during the first German gas attack.

Appease your appetite with a hearty plowman's lunch in a local restaurant in Ypres.

Peruse the varied exhibitions of the Flanders’ Field Museum to observe artifacts that speak eloquently of the battlefield’s history; hear the story of the war on an audio guided tour before ascending Hill 60 to see tunnels that played a pivotal role in the war.

Depart to the city in search of Passchendaele, a brutal battlefield that transformed into a tranquil and traditional town. Then head to the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery to feel emotionally stirred at the sight of 35,000 solemn headstones. Learn about the global significance of this memorial site then travel to Essex Farm Field Hospital to see the iconic bunkers in which John McCrae wrote his influential poem, 'In Flanders Fields.'

Finally, venture to your last destination, the moving Last Post Ceremony at Ypres Menin Gate, and observe the simplicity of the daily tribute that remembers the courage of fallen soldiers. After the ceremony, return to your vehicle and relax during the journey back to Bruges, where the tour concludes.

Excellent historical and informational trip, Our guide was extremely personable and had great local knowledge. Tour Organizers could do a better job with precisely where to meet, or even provide a big sign with the tour name on it, but other than that all was great, and fully recommended.

A very full and educational day
Anthony_G, Apr 2024
First off, a big thank you to our guide Diedericke for his amazing knowledge and expertise in the Ypres battles. He very much deserves 5*. It was difficult to fit so much in one day, but we somehow managed although we would have liked more time at the Paschendale museum and at Tyne Cot. Sadly, the In Flanders Fields museum was closed and at the time of our visit the Menin Gate is undergoing refurbishment. The ceremony was perfectly observed by the large crowd, but the moment was a little spoiled by the scaffolding and construction vehicles. I would wait until the works are finished before going if you can. Lunch was provided at the Hooge crater museum cafe and there was free time in Ypres for dinner before the 8pm ceremony.
Thorough full-day experience
Maddy_H, Dec 2023
The trip was very thorough - we visited the German, French, and Commonwealth WWI graveyards, followed by the Flanders Fields Museum and closed the day with commemorative ceremony at the arch. The tour guide structured the day around the amount of daylight we had, which was very thoughtful. At lunch, we were able to chat with other members of the tour and meet new people.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and really brought history to life. Very friendly, able to answer any questions about the area, the battles. The Last Post ceremony was very moving.
A tour you cant miss , a full day of interest and knowledge.
Tan, Sep 2023
Personally the whole lot was absolutely brilliant . I loved every minute of it ! If i had to choose highlights it would be Tyne cot cemetery and the last post tribute . Our drive and Guide were excellent , quite a structured schedule for the whole day . Everything we did was very interesting and educational . Im very humbled to have seen all i have seen and now have a greater depth of knowledge and respect for all of the people who fought and served in the world wars .
Amazing tour of First World War events!
Norman_B, Sep 2023
We were impressed with our tour guide who was very informed and passionate about the First World War. The tour was quite long and involved possibly too many cemeteries, but we realized it was very important for us to get the full picture of the war. Transportation was excellent as was the lunch and service at the restaurant. The ceremony at the end of the day was very touching!
A wonderful day for the tour
Ray_C, Sep 2023
The last post at Ypres was very moving as they have done this for over 100 years. It was a amazing day of remembrance.
Wonderful day in Flanders
Alan_H, Sep 2023
Wonderful tour I was worried about the Bruges pick up not knowing the city the free bus took me to the prompt meeting after that it was perfect. The guide was brilliant and the sites unforgettable the last post was as moving as it was perfectly done . Dropped off at Bruges station the end of a perfect day. Just to add the lunch and free drink were quality all in all a perfect experience.
A moving experience
Jeanette_M, Sep 2023
Seeing the short distance between the front lines ie No Man's Land especially after hearing some of the descriptions of the battles. We were there on a beautifully warm, sunny Sunday. The comparison between the calm of the present day and the horrors of trench warfare could not have been more stark. Then seeing the buildings of Ypres, all dating from 1921 but looking original, was just incredible. the ceremony of the Last Post was even more moving at the Menin Gate than it is on Remembrance Sunday.
Great tour, lots of history

Extraordinary tour
Deborah_G, Jul 2023
Our guide Deidrich was amazing. He has an extraordinary recall of WW1 facts and stories, and helped me feel the grotesqueness and futility of the war with his calm, insightful commentary. It was a long day, visiting cemeteries, museums, towns that eke history, walking in no-man's land, seeing trenches and Hill 60, balanced with a little free time and capped off with a special, very moving Last Post that went longer than normal. Great air-conditioned bus with good driver.
Memorable day.

Flanders Field Tour - Sobering History for a World Currently Gone Astray
Raj_H, Jun 2023
Our tour guide (Dietrich) made the experience extremely memorable. He handled the topics of one of history's most somber events with seriousness and respect. At the same time he managed to maintain a wonderful sense of humour in dealing with all of the people on the tour. I highly recommend this tour as a way of better understanding the sacrifices of the young who died to preserve our future, a future that many do not appreciate and far too many take for granted.

Expert guide and a better understanding of what happened as a result
Catherine_B, Jun 2023
A superb guide. The tour gives you a greater understanding of events, by being able to walk where it happened. Did have an aching throat all day from the futility of it all though.

Amazing
Michaela_K, May 2023
The tour was more than I expected. A lot of stops along the way. Very educational. Lunch was nice The only downfall was that the menin gate is under repairs (2yrs), so you can't see the names. This isn't the tour company's fault. There is a shop that has the photos of the walls on a big screen. Highly recommended.

Great tour. Very informative. Very moving at the Menim Gate. The Trench was incredible. You see cemeteries on the side of the road and throughput the journey. Tyne Cote was very moving. Disappointed the Museum was not included however.
Our tour guide Jan was...
Bruce_S, Oct 2022
Our tour guide Jan was excellent, very knowledgeable and very detailed oriented. The tour destination was very powerful and moving. The reason we rate this a 4 is that head sets should have been used. There was so much information but a lot was missed because of the size of the group (18) and not everyone was able to keep up with Jan. It was also raining so umbrellas in the way. No matter the size of the group, head sets should be used so everyone gets all the information - after all, that is why we took this tour!! We have done several tours with Viator in the past, in Europe and in Australia, and all have used headsets ….so we just assumed this would be the same. We would not book future tours unless headsets are used
Response from Host, Oct 2022
Dear customer, Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Brussels City Tours. Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction. We will take your comments about the headsets into accounts. We hope to see you again in Brussels in one of our tours. Kind regards, Brussels City Tours
The Ypres part was good.
John, Sep 2022
The Ypres part of the tour was worth experiencing. Sadly we were told to meet our bus at 10:30. After waiting an hour we called (a second time) to learn that the Ypres part of th tour started at 1 pm and to meet our bus then. So we wasted a morning and missed a portion of the tour.
