What To Expect

Set out from your El Calafate hotel with your packed lunch in the early morning. Board your coach for the journey to Los Glaciares National Park, listening to information about the adventure that lies ahead from your guide.

Arrive at Bajo Las Sombras harbor after two hours and board a boat for a 10-minute ride to Brazo Rico. Meet your local guide, who will issue your trekking equipment. Hike down the shore of Lago Argentino and through the forest along Brazo Rico to Perito Moreno's base.

Climb onto a viewing platform to get an awe-inspiring view of the 196-foot (60-meter) front wall of one of the world's only advancing glaciers. Listen to a safety briefing from your guide as you gaze out over the massive ice field. Put on your crampons and prepare to scale the glacier. Although this trek can be difficult, rest assured that with your guide leading the way, you can safely ascend the glacier's sloping surface.

Breathe the bracing air and learn about glaciology and geography from your guide. View waterfalls, lagoons, streams and caves formed by the constantly moving glacier's ice melt.

Pause to enjoy lunch at a scenic point, then retrace your steps to the glacier's edge, spending about 4 hours total on the ice. Return to the Rico Arm for the boat and bus journey back to El Calafate. Finish your day's adventure with drop-off at your hotel in El Calafate.

Incredible day trip on the ice. We were picked up from our hotel on time, and taken to a coach which dropped us off in Los glaciares national Park. We had an hour to walk around the walkways to get a view - it was colder and windy there so bring layers. Then we got taken to the boat to be transferred to the hike on the other side of Lago Argentina, nice views from the boat. The hiking was great, they give you a harness and helmet to wear, and you have to bring gloves because the ice is sharp. Recommend wearing hiking boots as well be more comfortable when you put the crampons on on the ice. The hike was about 45 minutes through forest, then 3-4 hours on ice with a lunch stop. There are some ravines to avoid in the ice, but the guides are very helpful and sturdy, guiding you over the hardest parts. Bring layers as we kept on changing depending on wind and sun conditions, a face buff and ear warmers are good as well, and lots of sunscreen! We were back in town by 7.30pm. Everything was very prompt and professional, highly recommend!! The big ice hike has barely anyone, just 40 a day, so it feels undisturbed and the views and unparalleled. It's stunning, don't miss.

Book directly with Hieloya y Ventura
michelle_c, Apr 2024
The tour itself was great but it was done by a 3rd party, Hieloya y Ventura, and they charge £150 less per person directly on their site so this particular tour is a rip off. Do not book and go direct with them. Viator refuses to stand by their lowest price guarantee because it’s a different currency which is ridiculous and not an excuse to charge £150 more.

One of the best excursions I've been on....in the world. This is a very unique experience to trek across the glacier for three hours. Saw ice caves large enough to walk in, waterfalls, and lakes...all in the middle of the glacier. We had three very knowledgeable guides who always put our safety first and kept eyes on the group. The lead guide spoke English well and with the small group size it was easy to catch all of the educational details about the glacier. The crampons are very basic and rudimentary. With the way they strap to your feet, it is better to wear hiking boots since they are sturdier. Breathtaking views up close of the ice wall where the glacier meets the lake. Listen carefully and you can hear pieces cracking and see them calving!

This was a fantastic trip. It is a long day - but ever moment is memorable. From the climb from the boat through to lunch on the glacier, this is a day filled with experiences that I will never forget.

Awesome tour, the glacier is amazing. Be ready to hike, 5 hours total and about 3 1/2hrs on the glacier itself. Weather conditions are variable so check forecast and bring a little more than you need. They have a storage area after the boat ride, so you can lighten your load for the hike itself. Dont forget glovesice is sharp on hands, sunglasses and sunscreen. And bring snacks as lunch is at 2pm. Definitely worth the money.

The guide on the bus was very informative as were the guides on the glacier hike who gave you the basics to ensure you could use your crampons and to make the most of your experience on the glacier.

This is the famous Ice Trek -- very well-run company. Everything went very smoothly from the pickup at 7am to the drop off at 7pm. They've obviously done this tour a million times and have honed every part of it. It was surreal to be walking around the ice field for 4 hours really cold, wear hiking boots, I wore running shoes and it was a bit painful with the crampons. Great experience and highly recommend it through Viator -- we got a much better price that through the actual company.
