Scale the 8,300-foot (2,500-meter) heights of Pacaya, one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala. Great trip up to the Pacaya volcano. They picked us up right on time at the hotel and the whole day was a great trip. From the hike up the volcano, to the lunch at the Hot Springs everything was excellent. Our guides Juan Pablo and Claudio were awesome.

We booked our trip for Saturday, February 3rd. On the day of the tour, I waited as instructed in the hotel lobby at 6:30 a.m., but no one showed up to pick us up. I called the number of the agency in Guatemala that was in charge of my reservation, Gray Line Guatemala, but received no answer. We called Viator; they said they were going to issue a refund, but they did nothing to find us another trip, so we lost an entire day. After this terrible experience, I found more reviews from people who have experienced the same no-show. It is very unfortunate that Gray Line Guatemala continues to offer this tour and keeps not showing up without informing tourists about it, making them lose an entire day. Please do not book!

The guide and driver were super friendly with minimal English. The volcano hike fee is NOT included. You can purchase a horse to take you up and down the hike for a low fee. Not a lot of time at the spa to really enjoy and food is very American. Felt rushed for all events.

I based my reviews on 3 things: customer service, experience of the activity, and cost.
Customer service -Spotty communication, sometimes it was clear and others I would need to follow up several times. The day of the tour, the driver was over an hour late and we received no communication. When the driver arrived, they blamed it on traffic then said it was another driver who had a medical emergency. There was no apology.
Experience of the activity- So just to be clear, this company only provides transportation. No food, no water, no guide, no cost of entry into the park. The activity was nice but this has nothing to do with the tour operator.
Cost- Way overpriced. If I could do this again, I’d just get an Uber. They’re everywhere and cheaper. Plus, you have reception at the volcano and can get transportation back to the city. You’ll get a guide at the entrance and they’ll tell you all about the park.

The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is only due to lack of description of this tour on Viator website and lack of explanation of lunch activity from our guide. The volcano hike was great, however after the hike we thought we were going to have lunch onsite at the mountain. It had been 6 or 7 hrs since we had eaten breakfast and our group was really excited to eat an outdoor lunch. But instead we bussed about 30 mins to another town to a hotel with thermal pools. We were told to go in the pools and eat in the restaurant later. We told him we needed to eat now so we ate in a ho-hum hotel restaurant then to the pools (not hot springs) at 2:30. Overall the volcano experience great! Hotel lunch not so great. “Hot springs” description needs to change to “hotel thermal pools”.

We really enjoyed ourselves. Communication could be improved but that did not spoil our outing. Remember to bring a warm jacket. The wind can kick up and the temperature drops.

Volcano and hot springs good, but tour operator wasted an extra 3 1/2 hours in heavy traffic detouring to Antigua to pick up and drop off passengers in crowded van when the ad for the tour was to be only direct. This was obnoxious and unacceptable.

The hike is s very important part of this trip. That cannot be understated. But it's worth it. 10/10 would recommend. Definitely recommend bringing a speaker. Food was good. The spa at the end was necessary.

I do not wish to jeopardize anyone's job so I cannot specify why I did not rate tour five stars. I did this exact tour July 2018. Have worked in travel industry 50 years. I positively would recommend this tour to all able bodied and conditioned people under 60. Hot springs with lunch part was delightful and well worth what we paid.
