We booked the 3-day Ninh Binh and Halong Bay luxury ship option and were very hopeful that this would be the highlight of our Vietnam trip. In some ways it was, but overall, it was not the experience, we had expected and we wished, a few things would have been clearer to us before booking. On day 1, we were picked up and brought to a big pagoda. It was a pleasant stop, but there was no option to go cycling as indicated on the ticket. We then went to lunch and were excited to see Ninh Binh. We hadn’t been aware at the time of booking that the rice fields, which Ninh Binh is so famous for, can only be seen seasonally- that’s on us. However, the ticket had clearly stated that there was a 3h boat ride and we didn’t get it. We didn’t go to Tam Coc (the area featured on every Ninh Binh poster) at all, but rather only got about 70min on a tiny boat, going through some caves. It’s not the tour operator’s fault that it was raining cats and dogs but we should have been advised to bring a change of clothes - everyone had got a wet bum on the boat and we still had a few hours left before we could towel off and change. (Also be advised that you might have to help paddling on the boat). The hike up to the view point over the area is beautiful but my dad, who is 69, did not feel up to the climb, as the steps are very high and uneven. When we finally got to the homestay, dinner was outside in the cold, but the hostess was excellent and brought out some „happy juice“ and initiated a karaoke session. We got on really well with the rest of our group which is why we were disappointed when everyone ended up on different boats the next day. Ours was the Aquamarine and from what we heard, it was the best, not just due to its amenities but also because of its itinerary: we got to see an amazing cave with 3 chambers of stalactites and stalagmites and hiked up to the viewpoint on titop island on day 1 and did a bamboo boat tour through a cave into a bay with monkeys on day 2 (note: the caves on day 2 are very low and it takes skill to get through, so we do not recommend the kayak option). Other travelers apparently only had one stop to go kayaking. However, we feel the term „2 day cruise“ is very misleading. We got our cabin around 12pm on day 1 of the cruise and had to be checked out at 9:30 am the next day. The boats all go out just 90min (!) to Halong bay, where they all reach the same „parking position“, and stay there the entire time (!) before returning the same 90min on day 2. You do not go further out, you only see a fraction of the 1900+ islands of the bay and can actually still see the harbor lights at night. The activities are done by tender boat but they reach the same destinations as the day boats. If you are looking to just relax on the water of Halong Bay, fine. I am sure, in good weather, it might have been worth it, staying for the sunset. But you can see the exact same viewpoints on a day tour. Overall, we wished we had done that: taken a day tour of Halong Bay and maybe spent two days in Sapa instead of visiting Ninh Binh. We got off the ship at 11am, waited an hour for pickup and were back in Hanoi around 3pm, feeling like we had wasted at least one precious day. Now, we certainly would like to compliment the staff, as everyone is very hard working and friendly. But we would not recommend going to Ninh Binh in December, we would not recommend doing this tour when it rains and we would not recommend doing the 2-day cruise if you are pressed for time and want to see as much as you can. On the flip side: if you don’t mind taking it easy and are just looking to relax on a boat during happy hour for a bit, and the weather forecast is good, this is the tour for you.
