Some good points - the bus left on pretty much on time both times - the guides were helpful - we were provided with information about. Day of the Dead and Mixquic - the box lunch was good. There was sandwich, crisps/chips, a can of soft drink and a couple of chocolates - the guides provided some sensible advice on making purchases in Mixquic Some bad points - the on board microphones had some issues so it wasn’t always easy to hear the guides. They also had issues with the dvd player so we could only see half the movie that they tried to show to entertain us on a long journey. - you are paying for the bus journey and box lunch. The guides walk you to the church but that is really it. Having reread the description it doesn’t actually say you will get a walking tour in Mixquic but I, like others, had expected that. I completely understand why they can’t do that as it is so busy but I think that should be clearer in the description. - Mixquic is pretty small so the 5 hours or so we had there was a long time with not much to do. There is a stage area with entertainment but it wasn’t enough to keep me occupied for the whole time. It does get really busy so I guess it makes sense to be there early but just be prepared for a lot of hanging around. - it was incredibly busy. This is not the fault of the tour company but it is worth mentioning. As it gets dark it gets difficult to get into the cemetery due to the number of people, many of whom think that the progress is slow because they aren’t pushing hard enough. A lot of the time it felt like Disneyland and the drunk tourists added to that affect. It is also difficult to get back to the bus due to the number of people still arriving. I was one of the ones who headed back to the bus early and it still took me an hour from the church to the bus (it was a 15 walk from the bus to the church when we arrived). I personally would not go again as I don’t think it’s worth it. However, if you really want to go to Mixquic for day of the dead you should take this tour as it will be much easier than organising your own transport. Phone signal is very patchy when you are there due to the size of the crowds so make sure you pay attention to the route (or just follow the crowds) and make sure to leave enough time to get to the bus.

We really appreciate your comments about our tour to Mixquic last Novembre the second, which surely help us find improvements in our service, and we are happy to read that you enjoyed the job of our two guides and our service, they really are well trained. We are sure that no apology or comment will be enough to repair what happened. As you say, it must be very important to add to the information that Mixquic is really crowded for those dates. We will take in account your suggestions, however it is essential to highlight that our staff involved is committed to offer a careful and quality service, based on the respect and attention that our clients deserve.
      An overpriced bus ride

This tour was poor value for the cost (over $100 CAD). As transportation to Mixquic, it was fine — safe, comfortable bus that left and returned on time, plus a mediocre boxed lunch (including a chocolate skull) — but that’s essentially all it was. Some Wikipedia-style info about Day of the Dead was rattled off by the guides, and most of the Disney movie “Coco” was shown (with multiple technical glitches). But once we reached Mixquic, we were left to our own devices for the next 5 hours — i.e. the guided visit of the church never happened. This arrangement actually makes sense, as the scene is extremely crowded and chaotic … but the “tour” should be advertised and priced accordingly. The two guides were friendly and worked hard to keep the large group of people organized. I imagine it was a very long and tiring day for them. As for the experience of el Día de los Muertos in Mixquic, it’s not for anyone with claustrophobic tendencies or sensitivity to hyperstimulation. That’s not generally me, but nevertheless, I was starting to feel unsafe in the crush of people around the church/cemetery, so l returned to the bus well before the designated time (9:45 pm). The carnival atmosphere in the streets surrounding the church is colourful, noisy, and fun in its way … though I personally would have been happier with a shorter visit. On a final note, I had wondered if the presence of tourists (including myself, of course) would feel like a violation of the sacredness of the event. I think the church and cemetery should be reserved for traditional activities and participants, but the surrounding scene — comprised mainly of Mexicans — was far from sacred in its vibe, so I didn’t feel like an intruder there at all.

Guides were awesome! Need more toilet paper in bathroom. If you go, please be considerate and come to the bus on time.

      Beautiful but.....

The beautifully decorated graves. However, I felt tourists should be banned, incl. me. The bus trip was poorly organized. We were not told of bathroom on bus until we arrived. No tp, soap or towels. Box lunch was given but on-screen instructions said not to eat on bus. Later, we were told that would have been ok.
      Response from Host, Nov 2021
Dear Kay Yaks, Thank you very much for your comments, we really appreciate them and they are very helpful for us. Mixquic is the best way to show our culture, our ancestral traditions of how we honor our deceased family members and friends. In the same instructions video, we mention that our coaches are equipped with toilet facilities; we apologize the soap and towels were missed, sure was a mistake from the people in charge of cleaning the unit, we are very sorry they missed it. The lunch was given on board, due to the lack of restaurants in Mixquic, but, we will make sure to be clear on mentioning that our visitors can eat their box lunch on board on this particular tour. We also hope you enjoyed the experience of the day of the dead. Best regards.
