What To Expect

Greet your guide at the Old Harbour, located in downtown Reykjavik. After a short safety briefing, you'll board your boat and set sail on the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

As you sail, listen to information-rich commentary from your guides: hear of what attracts whales to Iceland’s waters and scour the water for sightings of Minke whales, humpback whales, dolphins and porpoises.

Following your whale watching cruise, return to shore and bid your guide farewell. With your tour ticket, you’ll be able to gain free entry to Reykjavik’s incredible Whales of Iceland museum — the largest whale exhibition in the world. The Whales of Iceland audio-guided app is accessible at the App Store and Google Play or can be download on-site with free Wi-Fi and headphones available.

Bathed in the blue light of the ocean, see full scale models of 23 different whale species as you browse exhibits detailing the behavior and physiology of the colossal mammals. Enrich your natural knowledge at interactive stations and follow the migration routes of tagged whales in the wild.

Please note: Whale watching is a natural activity governed by weather and chance. If the trip is cancelled due to bad weather, the whale watching part of the ticket is refunded. If no sightings are on the trip, then you have the option to repeat the tour any time in the future.

Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

Brilliant trip! While we did only see one Whale, we spent lots of time observing it and was given loads of information by the tours host.

Great trip and day out, our guide was fantastic and we thankfully got to see whales, it was a fabulous trip. The exhibition was also very interesting, thoroughly enjoyed it all.

Underwhelmed

The gentleman narrating was knowledgeable but a bit kitschy. We went out to the bay to see the two humpback whales that have been hunting there for past two weeks. Not much action from what another passenger said. Waters were calm but maybe we’d see a bit more out of the bay? The young gentleman taking the tickets was not welcoming bordering on rude. Not a good face for the company. The saving grace were the passengers! I made some good connections!

Excellent trip, seen humpback whale, minke whale and dolphins. Had a little shop onboard toilets & sea sickness tablets if needed. Advise: iceland class children 0-6 and youth 7-15. Confusion with tickets and had to pay extra while there.

Read before you buy this tour

Waste of time, we couldn’t watch any whales and operator provided option to come another day which is not practical for someone with back to back tours scheduled.

We do offer always all passengers a free tour if their tour they joined was not successful, it is according to our conditions and best solution for everybody as we do provide you a 3 hours tour by boat with the crew and we do our best to make your time on the boat enjoyable with information provided by guide about ocean mammals and we also do our best to spot the whales, sometimes without a success but this is the risk everyone consider while booking a Whale Watching tour which takes place in wild nature and any human is not controlling, as the ocean is not a zoo or aquarium with entrapped animals. This was an amazing trip! We were unable to go out on our scheduled trip due to rough seas and having our 4 year old with us, but we changed our trip to the next morning (our last day). The man commentating the tour was funny, friendly and informative. We saw lots Fin whales (which is very rare on this tour), humpback whales and dolphins. The sea wasn't too rough and although obviously the boat rocked no-one in the family felt at ll sea sick.

The boat was nice, the guide was excellent. The only reason for the 4 star is that I had hoped to see the larger whales like in the picture.

We are truly blessed by nature and wildlife in Iceland and we are very lucky to be able to observe such incredible creatures all year-long, just a boat ride away! Of course, since they are free wild animals, there is nothing we can do to guarantee whether or not there will be sightings nor even their quality. In case of no sighting, we however offer a complimentary tour to our passengers. What our years of experience on the sea taught us is that it is recommended to go free of expectations. Whenever we go out on the sea, we are the whales' guests and not the other way around. At Reykjavík Sailors we try our best to observe the animals from a safe and respectful distance to ensure their freedom of movement. Each visit they pay to us is a beautiful gift we will never get enough of. Unfortunately there is nothing we can (or would want to) do to control them, so if there is a specific specie you dream of observing (which is completely understandable), it's always a good excuse to come back to Iceland ;) We hope you had a great time in Iceland, and hope to see you again soon!
