What To Expect

A multi-faceted city with layers of history, Rotterdam is one of the most intriguing cities in the Netherlands. Get to know the city, from its reconstruction after World War II to its busy cargo port on this 4-hour private tour available in the morning and afternoon.

Meet your guide in central Rotterdam and discuss your preferred sites, as the exact itinerary of the 2.5- to 3-hour walking tour can be tailored to your interests. Some of the top attractions you should not miss include as follows:

In the borough of Rotterdam Centrum, stop by St Lauren’s Church, a 16th-century church that was heavily damaged in a 1940 bomb attack but has been restored to its former grandeur. Also known as the Great Church of Rotterdam, this is the city’s sole remaining medieval structure. Enjoy a spectacular view of the city from its spire.

Stroll through Museumpark, home to a number of museums including the Chabot Museum, the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, the Netherlands Architecture Institute, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Kunsthal museum and Villa Sonneveld.

Check out the Cubic Houses built by renowned architect Piet Blom. Step inside these unique high-density housing cubes, architectural projects of post-war Rotterdam, which are tilted on hexagonal poles.

Visit the Old Harbor (Oude Haven), Rotterdam’s historic harbor that dates back to the 14th century. Now a lively waterfront lined with fine restaurants and cafés, Old Harbor is ideal for an afternoon stroll.

After your walking tour, head to the Port of Rotterdam for your 75-minute cruise. Rest your feet and soak up the city skyline and views of the harbor shipyards, docks and shipping containers, as well as the Rotterdam steamship, the former cruise flagship of the shipping company Holland America Line.

Hear about the port’s history, which transformed Rotterdam into a major harbor city, eventually becoming the largest port in Europe (it was the world’s busiest until 2002 when until Singapore snagged the title, followed by Shanghai). Your tour ends back at the port.

Great Tour of Rotterdam
Andr_T, Sep 2023
An excellent personnalized tour that offered a complete picture of this charming city, Rotterdam. We had a great experienced guide that offered us excellent insight of the history of the city.
Awesome!

Skip was absolutely wonderful. We have had knowledgeable guides (Skip was one of the best) but he was also kind. He put Rotterdams history in context which allowed us to understand the people, past and present. We can't thank him enoigh!
Great option for exploring Rotterdam in a half day!
Alanna_L, Aug 2023
We met Adrien at 2:00 pm at our hotel and he explained much of the history of the city while we explored on foot through old and new Rotterdam. We stopped for fresh Stroop waffles at the Market and awed the amazing, often curious, architecture of Rotterdam, including the peculiar Cube Houses. All at a pace we were comfortable with, given it was a private tour. After 3 hours of walking, with brief stops, we were grateful to board the leisurely harbor cruise at 5:00 pm, where our guide departed. The Rotterdam Harbor is enormous and the cruise lasted 75 minutes. Great overall experience. Wear comfortable shoes!!

Our tour was cancelled 1 day before our booked date. Rebooking did not work as we were not going to be close by. We are still waiting for our credit on our visa
Great walking tour!

We LOVED our walking tour of Rotterdam. Our guide, Niels, was brilliant - hugely knowledgable, entertaining and the time flew by as he walked and talked us through Rotterdam's rich history, fascinating culture, beautiful architecture, cool street art and pointed out a few places for us to visit too as well as some personal anecdotes.

I love history, so learning about Rotterdam and its rise from the aftermath of WW 2 was so intriguing to me. Be prepared, it's a lot of walking, but I'm so glad I did it!

We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and can't thank VIATOR enough for providing an extrordinary guide to show us Rotterdam and answer just about every question we had. Our guide, a true professional who at one point was one of the top Program Directors for a famed river cruise line, met us early at the Rotterdam train station, our starting point, and proceded to guide us through a city whose rebuilding after Nazi bombing flattened it in the invasion of 1940 is one of the architectural rebuilding miracles of post World War Two Europe. Anyone. visiting the Netherlands who fails to take an educational walking tour like this is missing one of the great experiences of being a tourist.

Our tour guide, Raphael, was very knowledgeable and pleasant. He waited for us in the rain as we were running late...we were very relieved to still find him there. Luckily our weather cleared up. He is a native of Rotterdam and was able to apply personal anecdotes from his own upbringing to make our tour even more interesting. After the crazy hustle and bustle of Amsterdam, Rotterdam is a nice change of pace, and architecture. Wide, spotlessly clean streets, very sleek and modern. We thoroughly enjoyed our time getting to know Rotterdam and Raphael. Hope to return someday!

Highly recommend walking tour and harbor cruise with Viator's guide Jacob in Rotterdam. Grab your best walking shoes! We covered almost four miles. Jacob's English was perfect (of course he speaks five languages). His knowledge of Rotterdam was awesome and we saw many off the beaten path spots as well as the biggies. He paced the route perfectly for us and never failed to display humor and a pleasing personality. Our favorite port made even better with the tour by Jacob!

My tour-guide was knowledgeable about history, architecture, etc. and personable. He tailored the walking tour around me. For example, he said many people were more interested in the markets, but when he saw I wasn't interested in shopping, he adjusted accordingly. The harbor cruise was a fitting end to the tour.

This private tour was just excellent. Be aware that it is all walking except for the harbor ride at the end. Lots of information on how the city developed and the various cultures. The shopping mall was extremely impressive. Our guide was perfect. When I can get to her card, I will be sending her an appreciative note.

The tour guide was excellent. It was nice to see the remaining old and the new of Rotterdam. The harbour part of the tour was very good also but it would have been nice to see more of this. My husband enjoyed this part the most.

The tour was great! We had only one day in Rotterdam and this was an excellent way to learn about the city. Anthony was very knowledgeable and gave us a good overview of Rotterdam history and architecture. He was personable and professional and a wonderful tour guide! We highly recommend!

Viktor M, Aug 2017
