tl;dr: highly recommend booking this trip. This trip was absolutely everything we could have hoped for. I am trying to be concise, so just keep in mind there are plenty of other great things I am leaving out. My highlights: * Sumi is a wonderful human being and excellent guide. It's clear she loves Hokkaido and sharing it with travelers. She is knowledgeable, easy going, fun to talk to, and in general an absolute delight. * For travelers like me who are not yet jyozu at nihongo, Sumi's English is perfect, so it's easy to learn from her about the area, Hokkaido, and Japan in general. * Noboribetsu is amazing. Being from Midwest Illinois I do not get to see volcanic activity very often, and it is incredible! The separation of minerals leaving shocks of color in an almost alien landscape, boiling pools of blue gray, smoke escaping from vents on mountains, huge crows, deer, thick vegetation, statues of demons...hard to sum up the vibes of the place, you really need to see it for yourself. It reminded my partner of Yellowstone, but if course with it's own unique flavor. * Soaking our feet in a river heated by volcanic activity. This was so relaxing, especially after a couple days walking through airports and travelling around. I can't say much about this because it's impossible to describe just how incredible it feels to sit in that forest and feel the heat of the water and grit of the sandy riverbed soak into your bones. * Lake Toya is beautiful. A large, lovely lake with tree covered mountains dipping into the blue waters of a volcanic caldera lake, one of the biggest in Japan. Sumi took us to a great little restaurant with a view of the lake, where we had excellent soba and tempura, and some really good soft serve for lunch. Great Hokkaido specific snacks packed for souvenir sharing in the shop below. * The view from Mount Usu is not to be missed. An incredible vista with Hokkaido bay and Hakodate in the frame. I am not super comfortable around heights, but found the ropeway to be smooth and not too scary. There are some steps up here, but if you are traveling with people who can't manage, the view from the terrace is also incredible. * Throughout the trip, Sumi was able to offer adjustments and accomodations. She's a safe and confident driver and her van is comfy and cool in the summer heat. This is definitely a tour you will not regret. The next time we are lucky enough to visit Hokkaido, we will definitely be getting in touch with Sumi and arranging another tour. Do yourself a favor and book this now.

Amazing day on this tour!
Carolyn_U, Nov 2023
My husband and I had a fantastic time on this private day trip. We were only in Hokkaido for a few days and knew that we wanted to visit this national park but didn't feel up for renting a car and doing the navigation ourselves. Sumi and Taki were excellent tour guides - they were incredibly knowledgeable and also very sweet. It was really special to do a tour with people who are from Hokkaido - we learned a ton about the history of the region and also the role Hokkaido plays in Japan's modern agriculture. They were also so kind to take pictures for us throughout the trip - some of my favorite pictures from my trip are ones that they took of us! The sights at Lake Toya/Mt Usu were stunning. We also stopped for lunch at a great restaurant and a few less-traveled souvenir shops. I would 100% recommend this day trip to anyone visiting Hokkaido. If we ever make it back to Hokkaido we will definitely do another one of their tours!

Nice Tour Outside of Sapporo but Expect an Extended Drive
Robert_N, May 2023
Took this all day tour with Sumi Yamaguchi. Nice day trip that involved a bit of driving but the guide was entertaining and informative. We started at Hell Valley and went on a short hike around the site. Got to soak in a natural foot bath and later stopped at a local food market and also had lunch on the shore of Lake Toya. We then took a cable car up Mount Usu to enjoy the views from above. Be prepared for quite a bit of driving but it is nice to see the countryside of northern Japan. It would have also been nice if they had helped us order lunch since it was hard to review the menu items across the language barrier.

Hello Robert, Thank you very much for taking a day trip with us, and a great review! Yes, this tour require very long driving throughout the day. It was nice to have conversations in the car, talk about the history and culture of Hokkaido. I'm sorry that you had a hard time at lunch time. I should have helped you for ordering the menu at the restaurant. Please let me guide you around Hokkaido again if you have another chance to come back! Thank you again for choosing us! Best wishes, Sumi

Our day in Hokkaido was fantastic! The views of Shikotsu & Toya National Parks were amazing! Our guide Sumi was very knowledgeable, experienced, professional and considerate. Amazing natural beauty
Judith_R, Sep 2022
Our guide, Sumi, was wonderful. She knows a lot about the natural area, which was great for us since we enjoyed seeing birds and exploring the Moss Canyon. We packed a lot into the day, and even enjoyed a beautiful view of Mount Yotei in the sunset on the way back to Sapporo.
Response from Host, Sep 2022

Sumi was a fantastic tour guide. She was so easy to talk to, and she was very knowledgeable about the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, Sapporo and Hokkaido. The whole park area was gorgeous, the two calderas were beautiful, and the views from Mt. Usu were stunning.
