What To Expect

Greet your group and guide at Ryogoku View Hotel (near the stadium) in the afternoon,
or Keio Plaza Hotel Shinjuku in the morning for Tokyo Sightseeing option. Venture within to discover exhibitions that speak eloquently of the 1,500-year-old cultural tradition; see sumo-related memorabilia and ceremonial aprons with ancient origins.

With your knowledge enriched, venture to Ryogoku Kokugikan to witness the exhilarating Grand Sumo Tournament. Hear an expectant hush descend over the audience as the opening ceremony launches into action and the colossal sumo wrestlers take to the stage. Enjoy watching a series of sumo wrestlers grapple in the elevated ring made of clay covering in a layer of sand while your guide is explaining the traditions and ranking lists of the sport. You'll also be provided with an English brochure and sumo-ranking list for the day’s events. Usually, junior division sumo matches are held first, proceeding the higher-ranked matches slated for later in the day. Never thought I would enjoy this tour so much. Michiko was so much fun and such a sumo fan she made this tour a surprise highlight of our holiday. Highly recommend.
      Outstanding!

The tour was excellent! Our tour guide Miki was the best! Her english is outstanding! Very helpful; willing to go the extra mile to make Sumo watching a memorable must have experience in Japan!
      More than expected.

So much more than I expected. I thought it was just a ticket but the guide was amazing at explaining sumo rules and was helping us throughout the tournament understand events as they happened. Our guide gave backstories for all the wrestlers so we had a reason to cheer for our favorites in each match. 10/10, would go again.

We had a fantastic day of sumo thanks to our awesome guide Mitchiko. She was so passionate and knowledgeable. The introduction to sumo before going to the stadium was especially helpful, and then her explanations during the matches were the cherry on top. She made the whole experience (which was a bit expensive) totally worthwhile.
      Passion and Power.

The drama of the wrestling was what really impressed me during the tournament. The atmosphere was absolutely amazing!
Great experience, recommend it for sure

Loved it. The info and explanation from our tour guide made a huge difference, helped understand who was who & he even provided background notes on a number of the sumo wrestlers.
A must do in Tokyo - this tour experience was incredible

What a great experience. The entire afternoon was perfect. Our tour guide Michiko was fantastic. She is so knowledgeable and passionate about Sumo. Her passion really came through. Her English is excellent. If possible I would request a group that is lead by Michiko. The meeting point is very easy to find and very close to the arena. Michiko spent about 30 minutes going through the history of Sumo and all of the details of the matches, the ring and the strategy. Super informative and very helpful. We walked over to the arena and got inside with no problems. Once inside she gave us a tour of the arena showing us interesting photos and letting us know where the various souvenir and food stalls were. We found our seats and Michiko had a gift bag for us that had a boxed yakitori and some souvenirs in it. Our seats were excellent. We were there for the start of the afternoon session and between 2:15pm and when it finished at 6:00pm got to see all of the most important matches. It was a very exciting experience as the arena was full and the crowd was really loud and boisterous. I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about Sumo. I would also say if it is your first time to Sumo that a tour like this is must as you get so much information that you would not if you just bought tickets. Next time I am in Tokyo I will see Sumo again!

We were very lucky to have Michiko as our guide for this event. Michiko is a committed, enthusiastic and knowledgeable Sumo fan. Her insight into the traditions and formalities of the sport was essential in understanding the unfolding day. Additionally, her knowledge (and personally prepared schedule and notes) about the individual fighters made the events more compelling viewing. This was a value for money experience. Well done, and thank you Michiko.

Take was our awesome guide. Super knowledgeable and answered any question I had even when I was being silly. Meet up was very easy to find and they had staff outside with a sign to navigate us. The sumo tournament was an experience I’ll never forget. It was well worth it! Plus, Take kept us updated on the match and Sumo stats. I would do it again in a heart beat.
      Worth the time
      Beth_S, Jan 2024
Great way to have an understanding of what is happening and why during the match. Our guide was great.
      Well worth going

Wonderful event and exciting experience, I have always wanted to watch an sumo event live in Tokyo. Highly recommend this to anyone.
      A Great Experience
      Mark_W, Jan 2024
We were able to get good seats and have an enjoyable viewing experience. However the best part was the presence of our tour guide Michiko-san. She was very funny, knowledgeable about Sumo, provided an English program just for us to follow the matches, and went down the list to introduce the key sumo wrestlers. Throughout the day, she would even check in from time to time to make sure we were all following what was happening. I highly recommend this experience!
A highlight of our Tokyo trip.
      Julian_B, Dec 2023
This was an amazing tour. Our guide “Sally” was very knowledgeable and even provided us with handy matchup guides for each fight. The seats are well placed to not only see the action, but to take in the grand scale of the Ryogoku Kokugikan.
      A great cultural experience
      Jodie_E, Oct 2023
This was a great experience. It was very helpful as a tourist to have our guide (who was very knowledgeable and friendly) provide context re: Grand Sumo and the history of the sport as well as the state of the current competing wrestlers. After we had a short talk in the hotel function room (our meeting point that had been rented for tour attendees) were walked over to the arena and guided to our seats. The day itself was fantastic - our guide stayed for the full tournament and provided translations and anecdotes between bouts and even recommended where/when would be ideal to step out to get food and drink. The Sumo “museum” was a nice addition but only took about 10 minutes to go through in its entirety. All in all, worth the price and would heartily recommend to anyone visiting Japan for the first time or returning visitors.
      Unlike any other sporting event.
      Wesley_G, Sep 2023
Atmosphere of the crowd in the arena. The knowledge and enthusiasm of our guide. The location of our seats in the S area.
      Exciting afternoon of sumo!
      Kristin_S, Sep 2023
We picked this tour because it was the best way to get last-minute tickets to the sumo tournament. That said the tour and especially our guide Yoko really provided added value to the whole experience and made it a richer experience than if we had just gone on our own. It was great to have someone there to answer questions throughout the tournament. The sumo tournament experience is amazing to see in person, with excitement building throughout the day to the final exhilarating match. Don’t miss it if you have an opportunity to go!
