What To Expect

Travel from Warsaw to Oświęcim in a shared air-conditioned minivan, taking in the scenery of the Polish countryside on the long drive. When you arrive at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, skip the line with reserved entry and walk into the camp through the main gate beneath the infamous ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ sign.

Known as the deadliest of all Nazi concentration and extermination camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau was the site of an estimated one million murders during World War II. Today, its remnants have been converted into a memorial to those victims and a reminder of one of Europe’s darkest chapters.

Learn about the camp’s harrowing history through museum exhibits and displays at Auschwitz I, the former SS administrative center. See photos and the personal belongings of prisoners, and tour the remnants of barracks, a bathhouse, a watchtower, gas chambers, and crematoria with a guide. The tour also includes Auschwitz II-Birkenau, where most of the murders took place. If needed, provided headsets allow you to hear the guide clearly.

After several hours at the site, reconnect with your driver and reflect on the return drive to Warsaw, where the tour concludes in the evening.

The driver was excellent, but there was some delay in actually starting the tour once we arrived as we had to wait for another group. The tour guide through the facility was outstanding, very knowledgeable, excellent English, appropriate demeanor for such an awful sight, and answered questions well. Very patient with slower members of the group. The facility is overwhelming. Something everyone should see so that we hopefully will never do again.

Description states 1) minivan 2) English speaking guide. Four of us were crammed into a Kia sedan with a non-English speaking driver. I don’t even know his name because he didn’t care to give it to us. Left Warsaw at 10 and got to Auschwitz at 3. Pick us up later instead of driving that slow. It’s a 3.5 hr trip. I know because he dove us that fast home. At Auschwitz you have an English speaking guide but only enough so to repeat the tour pieces. She didn’t understand any questions presented to her. We had ten min break before and after the tour (along with with hundreds of others) to grab a drink and use facilities. Same guide walked too fast at Birkenau to bother to stay with her. We had one bathroom stop in way to Auschwitz and none on the way back. Sure it states no food provided but we couldn’t ask the driver to stop as he didn’t speak English. At least plan a facilities stop into the day. It’s a shame I am hesitant to use Viator any longer due to this trip
