The Austin Aquarium is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Downtown Austin. Public transit options are limited, so the most convenient way to get there is by car. Take the US-183 highway, and exit toward Anderson Mill Road. The aquarium lies just ahead.
The aquarium is open Sunday through Thursday from 10am to 7pm, and Friday and Saturday from 10am to 8pm. For fewer crowds, go early in the week or on Saturday or Sunday before lunchtime, since the aquarium is busiest on weekend afternoons.
Budding scientists can participate in Morning Rounds, an event where guests follow the husbandry staff as they check on the animals and make sure the aquarium is operating properly. Though the event is designed for kids over age 8, parents also appreciate the chance to learn how the aquarium works, from the filtration systems to animal food preparation.
