Khlong Saen Saep

Bangkok

The Basics

Skip the notoriously bad Bangkok street traffic with a ferry ride down Khlong Saen Saep. Ferries are a quick and cheap way to get around. There are two lines through the city: the eastern route, which ends at Wat Sriboonreung, and the western route, which ends at Golden Mount. You can also book a tour of the canals or a boat ride with stops at the lush gardens of Wat Prayoon and the turtle temple.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • A Khlong Saen Saep ferry ride is a great way to cover a number of sights and access top shopping spots throughout the city.

  • The eastern and western ferry routes meet at an interchange at Pratunam Pier.

  • Ferry tickets can be purchased on board. Prices depend on the distance traveled. Note: It’s helpful if you have small change to purchase your ticket.

  • Canal boats are known for having haphazard service, and boarding and disembarking can be dangerous during busy hours. These services might not be the best option for families with small children.

When to Get There

If possible, avoid taking canal boats during peak hours, between 7–10am and 5–7pm. The boats can be packed at these times, and assistance when entering and exiting the boat may be limited.

Safety on the Saen Saep

Canal boats don’t hang around for long at the piers. You need to be prepared and quick when boarding and disembarking, especially during peak hours and when it’s raining (the docks can get quite slick). Know which pier you want to disembark at, and have your map handy. Don’t forget to hang on tight to your personal belongings—nobody wants a soggy day pack.
