Maeklong Railway Market

Mae Klong, Samut Songkhram, Bangkok, 75000

The Basics

The Maeklong Railway Market sits atop railway tracks, but the vendors have learned to adapt. When the siren sounds—around eight times a day—stall owners quickly move out of the way of the approaching train. Now more than 100 years old, the Maeklong Railway Market used to sell fish only. Many travelers visit independently; alternatively, opt for a guided tour that also stops at nearby floating markets.

Great
Journey was quite long. Our guide (Tanya) was good. She even bought a few fruits for us to try and found a spot to stand while we wait for the arrival of the train. Floating Market was a great experience too. Get to taste Coconut Ice Cream while on board the boat for THB 60.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The train travels quite slowly through the market, but you should still stay well away.

  • Vendors are used to the train passing through their market, and the risks. Follow their lead and move away when they do.

  • The train’s siren is very loud, so you’re unlikely to miss it.

How to Get There

The Maeklong Railway Market is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Bangkok, in Samut Songkhram. To experience the market as a train passenger, take a train on the Maeklong Railway from Wongwian Yai station in Bangkok to the last stop, then walk back through the market. Otherwise, take the Skytrain to Victory Monument, then a minibus to the market.

Catch the Skytrain to the Chatuchak Weekend Market

For a different train-and-market experience, hop on the BTS Skytrain to Mo Chit station in Bangkok. On Saturday and Sunday, vendors set up thousands of stalls, creating one of the largest markets in the world. You can buy practically anything at the Chatuchak Weekend Market, from fashion to food. And there’s no danger that a train will cruise through it.
