A small community on the east coast of Bora Bora, Anau is known as a dive and snorkel site. Come here to spot majestic manta rays and revel in the quiet pace of life.

The Basics
If you’ve ever dreamed of swimming with manta rays, you can make your dream come true at Anau. On a clear day, snorkelers can spot the rays gliding up to 80 feet (25 meters) below the surface – while divers can get an even closer look. While the rays are the main attraction, the two coral reefs here are home to a wide variety of sea life, from colourful corals to turtles, black-tip sharks, moray eels, and more.
On dry land, there’s an interesting marine museum nearby with a collection of miniature replicas of famous boats such as the HMS Bounty.
Things to Know Before You Go
- You must have passed your PADI scuba dive certification before you can join a diving trip here.
- You can rent dive and scuba gear via your hotel or at one of the dive shops on the island.
- The marine museum is only open upon request so contact ahead of time if you wish to visit.
How to Get There
Anau is located on the east coast of Bora Bora island in French Polynesia. The closest international airport to Bora Bora is at Papeete in Tahiti. To reach Bora Bora you’ll need to fly to Tahiti and transfer to a smaller plane from there.
When to Get There
The manta ray dive site is protected and diving is only allowed in the morning in order to preserve the area. High season in Bora Bora runs from May to October when the weather is driest.
