Motu Tapu

The Basics

Once the private beach of Polynesian Queen Pomare IV (who reigned in the 1800s), Mont Tapu has long had an association with exclusivity. Nowadays, the island is open to guests of the Conrad Bora Bora Nui, who can make the 10-minute boat ride across the bay to enjoy the pristine beaches of the islet—perfect for a lunchtime picnic or romantic dinner. There’s excellent snorkeling off the island too—Bora Bora is home to colorful coral gardens, many different species of tropical fish and larger sea creatures like manta rays and sharks.

When to Get There

For the sunniest weather and the best conditions for diving and snorkeling, plan to visit Bora Bora between May and October. The rainy season starts in November and lasts until April. Bear in mind that heavy rain can affect underwater visibility—so it’s not the best time to plan a dive trip to the island.

Visit Faanui Bay

Just a few miles north of Bora Bora’s capital Vaitape, Faanui Bay is a popular beauty spot that’s a regular stop on 4x4 tours of the island. You can stroll the beach, swim in the calm, clear water or visit the historic protestant church that was built in the 1800s. History buffs should keep an eye out for the remains of US military paraphernalia—including cannons—that date from the Second World War.
