Overlooking the unspoiled landscape of Povai Bay, Bloody Mary’s is Bora Bora’s most famous restaurant. Open for lunch and dinner, it’s a must-visit spot for vacationers on the island.
The quirky, tiki-style Bloody Mary’s was opened by Polish aristocrat Baron Jerzy Hubert Edward von Dange in 1979. Known simply as George to his friends, von Dange created a tiki-style eatery, and the combination of fresh seafood and fun atmosphere made it an instant hit. Von Dange sold the restaurant to LA businessman Dexter Hewett in the mid-80s but the laid-back tiki atmosphere and excellent seafood remain. After a day out on the water swimming, sailing or taking a jet ski tour, many visitors would tell you there’s no better place to refuel and relax.
Bloody Mary’s is found in Povai Bay on the island of Bora Bora in French Polynesia. The closest international airport to Bora Bora is at Papeete in Tahiti. To reach Bora Bora you’ll need to fly to Tahiti and transfer to a smaller plane from there.
The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday year-round and closed on Sunday. It’s a popular spot for both lunch and dinner, and the bar area stays open later into the evening. High season in Bora Bora runs from May to October when the weather is driest.
Experienced hikers looking for a challenge on the island should head to Mount Pahia. Best enjoyed with a guide there’s no marked trail up, but for those with the stamina and sense of adventure to scale the mountain, the rewards are worth it as you’ll enjoy panoramic views over the island and the turquoise Pacific Ocean beyond.
