Copley Place is a luxurious, central place to shop, eat, work, and play in historic Boston. Named for American artist John Singleton Copley, the shopping center was designed by The Architects Collaborative and built in 1983. The building’s center atrium and skylight lets in a ton of natural light and creates an airy feeling inside. The bi-level indoor mall also offers access to The Westin and Boston Marriott Copley Place hotels as well as nearby office buildings.
The closest public transportation station to Copley Place is Back Bay, which is accessible via the MBTA Orange Line and Amtrak. You can also take the MBTA Green Line to the Copley Green Line station; the mall is about two blocks from there. Driving in the Back Bay neighborhood is discouraged because the roads are typically congested.
Since winters in Boston can be bitterly cold, the best time to visit is in the summer and fall from June to October. Keep in mind that you’ll encounter the biggest crowds during the summer months. Copley Place is located near Copley Square, a bustling green space that serves as a pathway to other major attractions—expect the area to be buzzy with people, especially when the weather is warm.
Anchored by the John Hancock building and Trinity Church, this Back Bay area is known for its upscale restaurants and stores. The city square contains some of Boston’s top historical sites, art, and architecture, including the Boston Public Library. Here, you’ll find a truly grand main reading room with a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
