Visitors can explore six galleries: two permanent, three changing, and an audiovisual theater. The museum houses more than 9,000 artifacts, as well as the island’s most comprehensive and extensive collection of arts and crafts, including paintings, boats, furniture, textiles, ceramics, baskets, and tools. Visitors can visit the old jail and take part in special lectures and hands-on workshops. The museum is part of some Cayman Islands tours and can be visited independently.

The Cayman Islands National Museum is located on Harbour Drive, in the heart of George Town on Grand Cayman. It’s about a 2-minute walk from the cruise port. There is limited street parking available, with paid parking at the Bayshore Mall. Some tours provide transportation and include a stop at the museum.
The museum is open Monday to Friday from morning to early evening and Saturday from morning to midafternoon. It takes around an hour to explore the museum, including a 20-minute introductory video. The museum has an active calendar of special events, including lectures, workshops, and celebrations of Caymanian traditions.
The museum was founded in 1986, but the building it’s in—the Old Courts Building—is close to 200 years old and is the oldest surviving building in the Cayman Islands. It has been a post office, courthouse, jail, schoolroom, public library, bank, church hall, and dance hall. Visitors can see part of the old jail today while exploring the museum.
