All about Denarau Island

When to visit

July and August are prime festival months in Fiji—this peak season brings warm, dry weather, and plenty of visitors. It’s also when two of the country’s biggest festivals kick off. The Hibiscus Festival is a 9-day affair held in Suva, culminating in the crowning of the Hibiscus Queen. Closer to Denarau Island, the week-long Bula Festival happens in July in Nadi. It offers traditional performances, food trucks, and fun.

Getting around

Thanks to its small size, getting around Denarau is easy. The convenient Bula Bus runs frequently and stops at all of the island’s larger resorts and popular spots. You can purchase a weekly pass if you’re staying for a while, or pay as you go. Otherwise, it’s a lovely island to walk around—taking a peaceful stroll is the perfect way to get in the vacation mindset.

Traveler tips

In Port Denarau, Nadina Authentic Fijian Restaurant is the place for fresh seafood and warm hospitality. You'll want to return to it again and again to try menu highlights, including octopus salad, kokoda (the Fijian answer to ceviche), and kovu (fish, chicken, pork, or prawns steamed with coconut milk and spices). Pick an outside table with an ocean view to watch the sunset as you eat.
