A quiet and slower-paced town devoid of any major foot traffic, Avanos is a great jumping off point to explore the rest of the historical region of Cappadocia. Consider booking a guided tour to visit the fairy chimneys at Zelve Open-Air Museum, the rock churches in Göreme, or the underground cities of Özkonak, Derinkuyu, and Kaymakl?. You can also go hot air ballooning, hiking, horseback riding, and rafting within the unique landscapes of Cappadocia; all of which is readily accessible from Avanos.
To reach Avanos, fly from the international Istanbul Airport to Nev?ehir-Kapadokya Airport. The town is approximately a 28-minute drive east of the airport. Once you arrive, Avanos is a short drive from most major sites.
For the best weather, visit Cappadocia and Avanos April through May and September through October. If you choose to go during summer (peak season), consider visiting the main attractions early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds.
A short drive from Avanos, this incredible place dates back to the 4th century. It’s known for its cave churches—carved out of the soft volcanic cliffs—and was an important monastic site during the Middle Ages.
