The otherworldly rock formations at the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia UNESCO World Heritage Site were formed by centuries of wind and water erosion. The malleable rock was also transformed into living spaces, monasteries, churches, and tombs, some of which date back to the Middle Ages. The best examples of these structures are at the Göreme Open-Air Museum, where ancient churches were carved out of the cliffs by Byzantine settlers.
The town of Göreme itself is located in the center of the national park.
Some of the cave dwellings in the city have been transformed into hotels.
Since this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts lots of tourists, especially in the summer.
You will need to do a lot of walking to see the sights; make sure to wear comfortable shoes.
The easiest way to get to Göreme from Istanbul is by flying to Nevşehir, which is about a 25-minute drive from Göreme, or to Kayseri, which is about an hour away. You can rent cars at either city’s airports. Alternatively, consider booking a driver or a guided tour for hassle-free travel.
For the best weather, visit Göreme in the spring (April–May) or early fall (September–October). If you choose to go during summer, which is peak season, visit the main attractions early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and the crowds.
Located just a short, 15-minute walk from the town of Göreme, this park-like museum protects an area that was an important monastic site during the Middle Ages and includes some ruins that date back to the 4th century. The insides of the churches, which were carved into the hillsides, are covered in vibrant frescoes. Highlights include the oldest church, Tokali Kilise (Buckle Church), and the best-preserved, Karanlik Kilise (Dark Church).
