Gaya Island’s most famous feature is undoubtedly Police Beach, a pristine stretch of white sand lapped by clear waters that are ideal for snorkeling and swimming. You can also go scuba diving to increase your chances of spotting sea sponges, clown fish, sea turtles, and hundreds of different types of hard and soft coral. The island is often included on island-hopping tours of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, which typically also take you to the nearby Manukan and Sapi Island.
There are several luxury hotels on Gaya Island, but expect quite a hefty price tag to stay overnight. Booking far in advance is highly recommended.
If you’re embarking on one of Gaya Island’s hiking trails, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen and mosquito repellent, and take plenty of water and snacks with you.
Near Police Beach, there’s a kiosk where you can rent snorkeling gear and buy cold drinks and snacks.
You’ll need to pay an entry fee to the park, which covers its conservation. It’s less than $10.
Small speedboats depart for the islands from Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal between early morning and mid-afternoon. Gaya Island (Pulau Gaya) is closest to the city shores, and takes around 15-20 minutes to reach by boat—make sure you find out what time the final boat departs from the island, as the last one usually leaves around mid-afternoon.
The best time to visit is during Borneo’s dry season, which runs from March to September. Though you can still enjoy the island outside of these times, you’ll have a higher chance of rough seas and downpours, which can also have an effect on underwater visibility.
In addition to snorkeling and scuba diving, there’s plenty more to enjoy on the islands of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. The Coral Flyer Zipline connects Gaya Island to the small island of Sapi, and is famous for being one of the longest island-to-island ziplines in the world. Paragliding is also a popular activity, and gives you unrivaled views of the archipelago.
