The basics

While the temple interiors are closed to the public, a walking tour of the Ginkaku-ji Temple affords views of its tree-lined gardens. Follow the circular route around the ‘Sea of Silver Garden’, a manicured sand garden featuring a sand dome representation of Mt. Fuji (the ‘Moon Viewing Platform’); past moss gardens, ponds, and islands; up to a hilltop viewpoint looking down over the Silver Pavilion.

Although it’s possible to visit independently, exploring with a guide offers insight into the temple’s fascinating history and unique architecture, inspired by Japanese wabi-sabi principles.

Excellent tour, covering Japanese food, culture, history, and (of course) temples. I recommend it.
Our guide was Yaka, and she was knowledgeable and fun with excellent English. She knew her history and we visited a mixture of popular and unusual places in and around Kyoto. This was a private tour for two people, which meant we could cover quite a lot of ground; using the buses and trains was eye opening about the Japanese culture of respect and honesty. It was a six-hour tour, and you cover a few miles in the day so wear comfortable shoes!

When to get there

The temple is open daily, although opening times vary throughout the year. The temple can get extremely busy, especially in peak season. Avoid the crowds by arriving at opening, or late in the afternoon, and opt for a weekday visit if possible. Some of the most stunning views are during the autumn, when the colorful foliage provides an atmospheric backdrop for photos.
