Things to do in  Longreach

Australia’s answer to the Wild West

In Longreach, visitors can immerse themselves in the often romanticized Australian Outback. The arid landscape and old-timey buildings give the air of having landed in a cowboy movie. Despite the town’s small size, there are plenty of things to do in Longreach, especially for history lovers. Ride a stagecoach along the old mail route, visit the Qantas Founders Museum and walk the wings of a 747, and settle down at a saloon-style restaurant to refuel after your adventures.

All about Longreach

When to visit

Temperatures soar in central Queensland in the summer. The most comfortable time to visit is from April to October—the winter brings cooler weather, and it's when most of the town’s main attractions and tours are open. If you’re hoping for fewer visitors, arrive on either end of the peak season—April or October both tend to have reasonable temperatures, and the town is quieter.

Getting around

It’s easiest to get around if you have a car—the Outback is huge, and the surrounding region has many places to hike and explore. If you’d prefer to minimize your time driving on the left, plenty of tour operators in town lead tours that include transportation. Longreach is compact, so walking between shops, restaurants, and accommodations is easy.

Traveler tips

It can get hot and dry in the Outback, so head to the nearby Thompson River to cool off by the water. Book a trip on an old-fashioned paddle-wheeler, or pack your fishing rod and lounge on the shore. It’s a great place to take in the sunset and unwind at the end of the day, and you’ll see plenty of locals enjoying the tranquil spot.
