Monterrey trip ideas
Spanning two major neighborhoods in downtown Monterrey—the Zona Rosa and Barrio Antiguo (Old Town)—Calle Morelos is a pedestrianized shopping, dining, and sightseeing street in the Nuevo León city. West of the Macroplaza, expect local shops with leather goods, clothing, and more; east of the Macroplaza, look out for cool restaurants, cute cafés, and the Mercado Barrio Antiguo.
Stretching some 10 blocks and crossing the Monterrey Macroplaza, most people stroll along Calle Morelos while sightseeing in both the Zona Rosa and Barrio Antiguo, one of Monterrey’s coolest neighborhoods both day and night. A staple on most city tours of Monterrey, highlights of Calle Morelos include the air-conditioned Mercado Barrio Antiguo—a dining complex with food stands, bars, and restaurants—as well as numerous streetside cafés, shops, and clubs.
Strolling the length of Calle Morelos is a must in Monterrey, for solo travelers and families alike.
The Zona Rosa half of Calle Morelos has a wealth of leather goods stores, as well as a vast selection of cowboy boots.
The Barrio Antiguo half of the street is a popular after-hours destination, surrounded by bars and restaurants.
Calle Morelos is accessible for wheelchair users, although there may be some raised curbs where the street crosses the Macroplaza.
Calle Morelos—officially Calle José María Morelos—stretches from Calle José Garibaldi in downtown Monterrey across the Santa Catarina River to Calle Séptima Zona in the España neighborhood; however, the main tourist stretch ends before the river. Easily reached on foot from most points in Monterrey downtown, it’s also accessible by private and public transportation. Several local buses pass the street and the Zaragoza metro stop is a block north.
The best time to visit the Zona Rosa stretch of Calle Morelos is during daytime hours, when the stores are open and the street is bustling; after dark, there’s little going on. On the Barrio Antiguo side, both day and night are excellent times to stop by, especially Sundays when a flea market crosses Calle Morelos. In the evening, when the bars open, the neighborhood is especially lively.
Monterrey, an often overlooked destination in the north of Mexico, has plenty to offer the curious traveler. Brush up on the past at the Mexican History Museum, admire art work at the MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo), enjoy sweeping views over the city from the Asta Bandera viewpoint, and gaze into the night’s sky at the Planetario Alfa.
